Cat people please come on in...I need advice!
I have a 3 year old male kitty. A few months ago he decided to pee on a blanket that was on my leather couch! I thought my DH was going to kill him! I said that it's probably because we changed the litter. So I changed back to the original litter and things have been fine until this past week.
We are painting our LR so we have the furniture pushed to the center of the room and covered with plastic tarps. Well, Monday the kitty decided he was going to pee on the tarps that are covering the couch and my DH caught him in the act! I thought it was because his litter box needed to be cleaned...DH has been slacking and I can't clean it because I am PG. So DH cleaned the litter box.
Well, yesterday when DH got home from work he saw that the cat peed on the plastic tarp again!!! I know for a fact the litter box is clean so I don't understand why he did this. Then this morning when we woke up we noticed that he did it again!
I am not sure what to do. I don't know if he has a UTI or is just being spiteful. My DH has had it and wants to get rid of him but that is not an option. I am just concerned that if this is out of spite that when the baby comes he is going to continue this behavior.
Any adivce?

my first inclination was UTI..
just think back..
did the litter box move? giving him less attention? eating/drinking patterns different? how has he been acting? is he stressed out?
put him in the bathroom overnight, just to see if he will use the litter box.. so he can get "used" to it again..

did the litter box move? no, we actually bought an additional litter box because we have two cats and thought it would be better and he was doing great with that for the last month or so
giving him less attention? same amount of attention eating/drinking patterns different? I don't see him eat because his food is on another level because of the dog but I know he has been eating. His drinking patterns are the same.
how has he been acting? is he stressed out? I don't think he is stressed out. He is not that kind of kitty. He has been acting the same. He is a crazy kitty and that hasn't changed at all.
I am going to try to collect a sample of his urine to have it tested.
Today I put him in an empty room with a litter box, water and food. So when I get home I am going to how that has been. I don't want to keep him locked up because I feel bad doing that.

It just might be the disruption of having the living room painted. That and I agree about peeing on the plastic jsut because it's plastic.
Try taking the tarps off the furniture when nothing is going on.

I have a female cat and she starting doing one and two outside the box. What solved the problem was I took the cover off the litter box and now use all natural litter. After my baby was born both my cats started doing number 2 outside the box but my vet said it was a virus(medicine worked-my one cat was 16 at the time and never had an accident).

I agree. I would first rule out a UTI but if that's not the cause, cats are very sensitive to change and I find that any deviation from the usual can make them nervous which manifests in behavioral issues like peeing outside of the litterbox, scratching rugs/furniture, etc. Good luck!

Re: Cat people please come on in...I need advice!
i feel your pain... in the past 2 months my 16yo kitty has peed on:
3 pairs of shoes the AB ROCKER a plastic bag filled with cans a plastic bag filled with purchases from BBB my PRINTER!!!! (yes she climbed on my desk and peed in it) my laptop bag DH's lacrosse gear bag (this was tonight after i changed the litter box)
we've had her treated for a UTI (antibiotics) and bladder inflammation (steriods).
clearly it's neither.
