Experience at SIRM/Cary L. Dicken MD

Hi Everyone,

I've had it with Cornell and I'm ready to try a smaller more patient-centered clinic.

I'm looking into Sher in NYC. I know a lot of women swear by Dr. Tortoriello- currently there is a four month wait. Does anyone have any experience with Dr. Cary Dicken? Or any other MDs at SIRM? I'm fortunate to not have any fertility issues, so no complicated diagnosis. My dh and I have done IVF with PGD to avoid passing on my genetic disorder. So we're basically looking for a competent RE with a decent bedside manner.

We did a frozen transfer about a month ago which was a BFN. There are two remaining frozen embryos so we are anticipating the possibility of having to do another round of IVF.

Any feedback on Dr. Dicken and SIRM would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try Dr. Braverman? He use to be affiliated with Sher. He is amazing. I used Dr. T and Dr. Braverman. I loved both of them.

I used Dr. T and had success with him. I recommend this practice. I waited 3 months to meet with him. I don't think the RE you mentioned was a Dr there when I cycled 2 years ago. Best of luck!

if you dont have any major IF issues, then I would think anyone in his office or another big group like RMA would suite your needs.

i saw Dr. T and he would not even take me on

Dr. T is worth the wait and many go in earlier if they get you on his wait list.
I have no experience with the RE you mentioned but then again I think she's new and I haven't been there since 2014. They hire very good REs all within similar practice manner.

Are you picky with your appt times for Dr T? I know someone who got an appt for 3 weeks away, not 4 months!

They probably got lucky with a cancellation.

Thank you all for responding!

I understand that Dr. T is the director. If I do choose him (and if he'll take me on) does this mean that I'll rarely see him? My current MD at Cornell I've seen twice in a span of six months (and no, he is not the director). I don't expect to see my MD every visit but occasionally would be nice.

Also, will SIRM allow my dh to be in the room for embryo transfer?
What's egg retrieval like?
Do you wait in the waiting room in a gown and bathrobe with twenty other women and their partners/family for 4 hours?
Do you get to meet the MD who will be doing the retrieval beforehand? Or do they introduce themselves gowned up and masked right before they knock you out?

Re: Experience at SIRM/Cary L. Dicken MD

You would see Dr.T for every appointment.

Yes, your dh will be allowed in for the transfer.

The egg retrieval is quick and easy and .. wait 20 other women????? What kind of factory is Cornell running?? I waited in a small area (with my dh) with a curtain and waited for my turn to go in. While I waited, the anesthesiologist came in to speak to us about my history and the procedure. I never came in contact with other patients while waiting for my retrieval, or while in recovery. They were also very efficient, so no I didn't wait for 4 hours lol.

The dr who did my ER was not Dr.T and I met him in the room while being prepped. It was my 3rd retrieval, and it was like this at my previous practice too so it didn't phase me. All the doctors and staff are wonderful and comforting.

Thank you, PennyCat! This is so helpful. SIRM sounds like Disney World in comparison. Chat Icon

Yes, AT LEAST 20 other women. I counted. It was a particularly busy cycle. It was like one very awkward pajama party....without the party, and instead of giggling there's the occasional quiet weeping and sniffling (yay hormones!). It was awful.....and they call the guys out one at a time when it's time for them to errr....donate. Everyone knows where they're going, there's no sense of privacy or dignity. My poor dh was mortified and pissed off (how's that for getting in the mood?). You would think we were clipping coupons with this sort of treatment when in reality we paid out of pocket for everything. Rant over.

Thanks again. I can't run fast enough.

I used Dr. Wang at SIRM, he is now at the conneticut office. Dr. Dicken did one of my transfers and was wonderful.

All around a great office, good luck!

Nope. Her first appt was a 4 week wait that she had to cancel. When she called back she had choices of 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the day of the week.

I called to make an appt. with Dr. T yesterday. They just returned my call and I was able to get an appt. in two weeks.

I guess they do have cancellations because last week the woman told me there's a four month wait.

Thanks again for the responses!
