I've heard of class mom's asking for 15 at the beginning of the year to cover expenses. Ours only asked for 5 per teacher for both the holiday and end of year gifts.

we usually ask for $10/kid to cover the class parties and then at Xmas and end of the year, we collect another $10 for teacher's gifts

Check with your PTA Chair, when I was a class mom we were given a maximum collection amount.

Re: Class mom

At our school, the class mom is responsible mainly for class parties and for the teacher gift funds.

Our PTA meets with the class moms after they are chosen (which usually isn't until mid-October!) to go over everything. In our school, teachers must be given gifts for the December holidays, Teacher Appreciation Day, and end of the year. The PTA suggests that class moms request $20 per family, but we MUST make clear that it's a request and that payment is optional. If you don't receive payment from someone, you can't ask them for it (although it's ok to send out a general reminder to everyone in the class, asking if they would like to contribute the gift giving fund as an occasion draws near). It's tough because in our school, some classes have only one teacher, but we also have inclusion classes that have two teachers and several teacher's aides, who all should be acknowledged with a gift. I'm often a class mom, and I've found ways to stretch the budget. For example, if a mom in my class sells something (like Thirty-One gifts), I've sometimes been able to get something like a tote bag that I can fill with books or teacher's supplies to use for teacher's appreciation day, so that I can save the gift fund to buy gift cards (that I know teacher's love) for the bigger holidays/end of year.

For class parties, I'd check with the classroom teacher about how many she wants to have and whether she collects the money or wants you to handle it. In kindergarten, the teacher didn't facilitate a collection, so I just asked whichever parents were assigned to a particular party to bring something in for that party that I requested. I thought that was better than asking for more money upfront.

But for 1st grade and now for 2nd, the teachers organized a collection for the class party fund, and the class parents utilized that money to buy all of the needed food and craft supplies. For first I think it was $10 and this year the teacher asked for $15.

I think every school is different so try to ask around (especially the PTA and the teacher). And I think as far as parties, every teacher is different in terms of how many they want and what type of party, and that may drive your decision of how much you need to collect.

Good luck!

You should check with your class rep or Pta director. We are told the specific amount to ask for. We suggest $10. It is an optional donation. It covers only the teacher's holiday gift and end of the year gift. If there is an aide they ask for a suggested donation of $5.

Re: Class mom

I would ask around your PTA...in my school, it would be very frowned upon to ask for money for party supplies...class moms usually have a facebook group or email chain where they post what they need for parties and families contribute that way if they want. I have had a gift collection about 1/2 the time. I find it is a crap shoot if people actually contribute to it.

Our PTA gives the class moms an amount to request for parties, and class gifts for the teacher.

Our PTA has nothing to do with class moms and we do not have class moms after second grade. The teachers send out requests for items for parties and may ask a parent to come in to help out if needed. A parent sends a letter out requesting money for holiday gifts and end of the year. First come first serve. I personally would prefer if the PTA was involved but it's not in the culture of our school. We tried one year and it failed miserably.

Re: Class mom

Every school is different. I'm surprised you weren't given guidelines... for ex. In our school you can only collect money once a year at the end of the year for a teacher gift and can only ask for a max of $5 (parents can and do give more but you can't ask for it). Parents volunteer for the parties (someone does the drinks, someone the treats, someone the crafts) and the volunteer supplies it from their own money. Those that bring, get to come to the party so there is no shortage of volunteers.

Anyway, point being - there are almost always guidelines set by the school (the pta - pta president, grade level head etc).

I didnt volunteer to be a class mom, but in our school, all the class moms have to go to a meeting with the principal and PTA this week. I'm sure they are providing them some rules and guidelines.

In my experience, the PTA was not involved in class parent stuff.

You can either request $ at the beginning of the year to cover parties, or as each event comes up, you can find volunteers to send in what's needed. We always find $ upfront works best...usually $ 10

Holiday or end of year gifts for teachers are usually a separate collection.

The only thing our principal requires is that class parent makes clear that money request is a voluntary donation

$45 per kid for teacher presents (PTA set this) for the year.
Class parties, moms or dads bring in crafts.
We have a strict no food party policy at the school. I actually like it (it stemmed from allergies & intolerances).
