Security at your elementary school
I am trying to start a push in my district to improve the security at our elementary schools. I was wondering if any of you could let me know what security is in place at your schools - is there a security guard, do you have double doors at your main entrances, what protocol is there to gain access to the main office, etc. Any info you can give me is appreciated. TIA

Re: Security at your elementary school
Up until recently it was next to nothing. I posted on here last year I think that I was so uncomfortabel with it.
DH had to bring something up to the school that DD forget. He walked right in the doors, went up to some old lady at a desk outside the main office and told her what he was there for.
He said to me- "I could have had a gun under my shirt, they wouldn't have been able to do a thing"
It was super scary.
I guess a bunch of people complained because we got a letter home that going forward the doors will always be locked and you will have to use the intercom to state your business and even "familiar faces" will have to show ID when they enter.
Again, this really wouldn't stop someone from concealing a weapon, but at least it's better than a wide open door.
We have no security guard.
I personally feel all schools should have ARMED security guards, but of course, they will claim they can't afford that of course.
It still makes me very nervous TBH

Security at your elementary school
No security guard. There are double doors at the entrance. They have cameras and when they buzz you in, there's someone in the office behind glass (like a bank teller). You show ID, but you usually have to call before hand, so they expect you. What freaks me out is that my DD's class (she's in Pre-K) and the Kindergarten classrooms are outside of the main building. And of course, the playground is all out in the open.

Re: Security at your elementary school
Are schools security are great. There is a separate entrance for parents or guests to come in and you have to get buzzed in by a security guard then you go into a small room where you fill out on some security computer your information. It takes a pic of you and scans your DL. You get buzzed into another room where there is the security guard waiting at a window. They don't allow you to drop off things to the class. If dropping off papers you leave it with the guard with the class info and they will send it down. Even signing your child out can be a process, but TBH I feel my child is safe there and they do everything possible to keep it safe.
WE were the first school right after Sandy to put officers at the doors of the school. They had that till they hired a security guard, which is a retired officer.

All doors are locked - the main office has to buzz you in and there is a security guard at the door where you sign in and get a visitor sticker. If you do not have a sticker staff will question why you are in the building.

We are in a NYC school in Queens. All doors are locked except the main door. There is a NYPD school safety officer who monitors that entrance. All visitors have to sign in and show ID which is recorded. It is certainly not fool proof but offers some protection

We have 1 security guard who sits at the greeters desk and one that walks around the school and is outside during recess. To get into the building you need to buzz in and show your license. Then you get in a small room and need to scan your license which goes against an internal database to record visitors and if there are any custody issues, etc. Then you are buzzed into the school. Parents need to sign in at security and where ever they are going gets confirmed before they walk down the hall. We have a camera security system that is monitored by the guards and all doors are locked from the outside and we have multiple lock down drills during the school year.

Re: Security at your elementary school
All doors are locked. You must be buzzed in to the building by the greeter or security guard. You must show ID. If you are there to drop something off, you just leave it at the desk. No parents are permitted to walk around the school. If you are there for a special activity (classroom project, chaperone a field trip, be a mystery reader, etc.) you get a visitor sticker and are escorted to the classroom by the security guard. The security guards are also outside at drop off and pickup and walk around and monitor the halls throughout the day.

Re: Security at your elementary school
Doors are locked. We have a security guard. Now, if you have to go after school hours, my DS left something he needed in his room or I had my parent teacher conference at 3:50, I was just waved in. There are still children in the building from after care, but I told them what I was doing and they said oh do you know where your're going? And that was it. You do need to show ID to pick up a child early. ETA: I haven't gone in during school hours. DS is in K and I teach somewhere else, but I will be going in next Tuesday for his Thanksgiving show.

Security at your elementary school
All doors are locked and we have a greeter. She is in her mid to late 50s and has never hesitated to let me in so it concerns me. She's never asked for id either... And she seems a little out there.

Re: Security at your elementary school
I teach at a high school. The main entrance is secure. There are two doors and security guards. You need to show id to and then they'll let you in. We have video cameras throughout the school.
The security at my school though is a facade. Students will leave doors propped open with a rock so they can get back in after lunch, etc. The rock keeps the door ever so slightly ajar so that its difficult to notice unless you're checking them constantly. They'll also open doors for people thinking they're being polite/helpful.
ETA: we have a school resource officer (nys trooper)

Security at your elementary school
we live in NJ.... my son is in kindergarten at public school. Basically, there are double doors at the entrance. once school starts for the day, they're locked. there is an intercom with a camera that goes to the office. SO if you want to get into the school once school starts, you push the button and talk to the secretary. (she can also see you on the camera) then you have to go right to the office and sign in... as far as i know, there are no "security" guards... its all done through talking to the secretary.

Security at your elementary school
My DC goes to a private school. After Sandy Hook the school had Suffolk PD and the fire marshal come in to inspect and do a safety analysis. Then they installed new doors at the front entrance. There are cameras and you have to be buzzed in twice - similar to a high end jewelry store (the first door must close behind you before they buzz you through the second one). All other doors to enter the school are kept locked and require a keycode or a badge to unlock from the outside and have safety release bars on the inside to exit in the event of fire.

While the security at city schools is fantastic most of the guards are "safety agents" not actual police officers. In very rough schools they DO have real PO's (I worked in one and we had two assigned to us PLUS tons of safety agents). Your typical NYC elem or JHS does NOT have actual PO's but many HS's do, if not full time they have a constant presence.

Ah ok. I remember back in the 70s or 80s my dad was assigned to a junior high I think- as an actual cop. But yes, it was in a very bad area.
