What is security like in your childs school?
Just wondering.
At my sons elementary school, you press a button and get buzzed right in.
Is that pretty standard??

DS is in preschool. Each parent has their own 4# pass code. I guess with the number of kids, you'd have a good shot of guessing a correct code. The front desk is always manned (wommaned). At old school everyone had the same password.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
I work in a private school in NYC. We don't have security. The front door is unlocked and there is a sign-in sheet on the receptionist's desk. The end.

There is none, but I'm in Canada. I wonder if they will change after this.

All doors are locked. You have to buzz to be let in but someone is at the door looking to see who it is before you come in (if they are not at the door, you have to speak through the intercom to state why you are there). Not perfect but at least it's something.

My child is not in school yet. But when I was in HS , ANYONE could just walk right in and roam around. If someone wanted to they could walk right in and open fire in the commons. I still think it's like that today.

The buzzer makes no sense to me. I just dropped some Christmas gifts off at the elementary school in my area. I do not have kids there. They don't know me. And I was buzzed right in. If I was anyone with a gun that buzzer did nothing. It's useless.

My DS is in nursery school and each parent has a pass card to get in, there is also a station in the front and someone has to buzz you in if you don't have a card.

It's the same at our elementary school The monitor looks at you through the doors from her seat and buzzes you in. That used to seem fine to me.

Exactly how I feel. I don't get the point of it. Anyone can be buzzed in. I know it all prob comes down to budgets and how much money can be invested in true security systems, but its unsettling to me.

Kindergarten doors are locked. You have to go to the front and be buzzed in.
If you have to drop off something, I forgot dd's lunch last week, they call the class and someone comes down to get it.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
The monitor buzzes everyone in & then stops you at the door so you can explain why you're there. Anything like "I have a meeting with x" will get you in.
The middle school is more locked down but not really enough. They intercom the office who buzzes you in.
Let's hope this changes things a bit.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
Yes, there is a buzzer. There is a security guard, but I don't think he has a gun. I don't know. I don't know how anything could prevent this. A buzzer, a locked door, that won't stop a crazy person with 4 guns. It's scary. I've done nothing but watch this and cry all day. I can't wait for my kids to get home.

What is security like in your childs school?
I am in and out of over 30 schools on LI on a regular basis including the schools in my own district. Every El school I enter has a minimum of a locked door buzzer system. Some districts have a security guard that you must sign in with some ask for id, some hold onto your id or keys in other words a few that I enter actually know who is in their building. Some districts have just have a sign up that directs you to the front office to state your business.
None of these systems would have stopped that murderer today. Unfortunately someone as deranged as that individual would have found a way to do his evil. A locked door is just a deterrent.

In my sons schools in Garden City you can walk right in which is scary. Years ago they used to have elderly ppl at the desk for you to sign -- anyone can get past them. This is horrible. Please hug your children extra tight tonite!!

They are saying the gunman was a teacher at the school, a reasonable person would have let him in.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
You have to ring a buzzer then step back and look into a camera. Then you get buzzed in you can go no further because once you step in there is another set of locked doors. You have to go to a side office and show your ID unless they recognize you.
ETA if you are there to pick up a sick child, the nurses office is near the front office and usually security walks you. If you are just picking up your child you wait in between the lock doors and the office door is closed also.
If you are there for a meeting of any kind they call to confirm with the teacher first.

Re: What is security like in your childs school?
They should make each school district put in their budget a state trooper for each school. If it means having to excess a few teachers (teachers and cops salaries are comparable) I believe the safety and well being of children and school staff is more important..and I am a teacher, so I am in no way teacher bashing. Scary that this could just be the beginning...and I think it should be stopped before it can start, no matter what the expense.

The gunman's mother was actually the teacher at the school. He killed her too. And given the family connection... yes, under any security system he probably would have been let in. Really there is no such thing as a foolproof system because there will always be visitors to a school.

Yes. I forgot about that. Once they see you and buzz you in, you must sign in and wait until they contact whomever you are there for. Obviously a person with a gun would not be waiting. And clearly if it was the child of a teacher, they'd let him/her in.

One of my many pet peeves with my preschool Montessori. We have a 4# pass, but they've had it broken in the past and just kept the door open. What's worse is even WITHOUT a code (or with it) its VERY VERY normal that there's no one at the front desk. Anyone can walk in.
They have a computer for checking in and out our kids but sometimes that's down too. Even if its up, no one checks to be sure you're using it.
They require ID for anyone other than a parent to pick up a child, but really who's checking?
So frankly its worthless in my opinion.
I'd be happier if they just had SOMEONE at the freakin front desk!
