lunch & snacks

As we all know, the search option rarely works, so I figured I would ask. My DS's Kindergarten teacher emailed me today to tell me that DS needs more food in his lunchbox.
I feel like he gets plenty. Each day I pack a water bottle plus a juice box to go with his snack. For lunch he always gets either a sandwich or something in a thermos- soup, pasta, chicken nuggets, cut up pizza, meatballs, chili, etc. Then he will get either fresh fruit OR a veggie, and a cheese stick OR yogurt. Then I pack his afternoon snack- I rotate between goldfish, cereal/granola bars, crackers, popcorn, fruit cups, pirate's booty, raisins.

Should I really be packing more for a 5 year old?

I teach 2nd grade, and that seems typical for what my 6 and 7 year olds bring each day.

That's right on target with what I pack for my 5 y/o DD. My DD has told me some kids have 2 or 3 snacks for their afternoon snack in the classroom and that she wants more. So I've been throwing in 2 things (like a granola bar and some goldfish). Is he complaining that he's hungry?

that sounds pretty typical of what i pack for my DS, who just turned 6 and is in K.
they have a morning snack- so i usually pack animal crackers, goldfish, teddy grahms, etc for that- plus he has his water bottle for drink.
for lunch, i usually do a yogurt, with some kind of fruit or veggie ( a few strawberries or carrots) and some kind of "cracker" (again, like goldfish, popcorn chips, cheezits, etc) with a juice box to drink.
maybe your DS isn't eating any of the stuff in the thermos and he's getting hungry in the afternoon? but it sounds like you're packing plenty! did she give you a reason why she thinks he needs more food?

Re: lunch & snacks

That's pretty much what my 6 year old gets. Maybe more.
She brings a sandwich for lunch with a yogurt tube.
For classroom snack it's either a cheese stick or pirate booty or a fruit pouch.
She isn't a big eater at all even at home.

ETA- I opened her lunch box this morning and found half her sandwich from yesterday still in there. Chat Icon

So some days she doesn't even eat a whole sandwich!

That sounds in line with what I pack for my first grader when I pack him lunch.

If I pack him a sandwich with 2 sides, I usually get 1 side home since he runs out of time to eat it all (and he's a pretty quick eater).

Re: lunch & snacks

My 6year old requires more food at school for some reason. Can you fill his pasta up a little more or make him a sandwich and a half? With a cut up apple or banana? That is what I do. For snack, ds likes 2 bags of pirate booty instead of 1.

That seems fine to me. I pack less for my 5 yr old because she is the slowest eater on earth and will never finish all of that food.

That sounds like it's plenty. I would get in touch with the teacher. He is likely either saying he is still hungry or asking her for something else. I'm sure there is a reason for her email so you are better off going right to the source.

Thanks, everyone!! DS has been complaining he is still hungry- which floors me, tonight for dinner he had 1 bite of chicken and declared himself full. I am going to pack a veggie & a fruit instead of alternating.

Re: lunch & snacks

Is he eating his whole sandwich or everything you pack on the thermos? IMO it is enough food.

I think that's enough food, but if he eats everything and is still hungry I would certainly pack him more. Just make it something healthy like an additional veggie or piece of fruit.

Sounds like enough for me. Are you packing the snacks and lunch separately? Maybe he's eating most of the food during whichever came first.
