How does one leave and become an expat?
I realize this greatly shows privilege. But I'm asking semi seriously. Iran now banning Americans in retaliation .. this is getting scary.
So how does one up and move? How does that work? I'm curious.

It's not that easy, TBH.
The easiest way is to marry a foreigner, lol.
You can look at countries and some countries put skilled workers needed lists, for example, Australia.
You can look at a transfer at your own job and look for an international transfer.
You can get up and move to a country and look for a job when there, but that's really risky (I have a friend doing that in the UK now and it doesn't look like it's going well).
You could go on a student visa.
You could go to headhunter.
If you have dual citizenship, that really helps. You can explore if you can get that based on your family history.
The way I moved was quite complicated, so I won't bore you with the details.

How does one leave and become an expat?
I'm trying to look into countries we already have genetic ties to and won't have to learn another language. Canada is on our list. My grandmother is from Scotland, so that's on our list as well.
I just want a Plan B. DH and I have both have careers where we can pretty much do them anywhere, albeit near a major city for DH. My concern is for DS's education because he has speech issues.

Honestly it's not so easy. I have family that has done it. Most other countries have way stricter immigration laws than the US. (At least before this latest ban.)

Quite complicated. Even if you have a work from home type job you can't just move to another country. Your company would have to pay you in that currency and have all business liscenses etc to operate there. You would be employed in that country. So your company has to agree
Expat assignments create dual taxation liabilities. Typically my company pays that but it's when the company asks you to move not the other way around.
Immigration laws vary country by country but most desirable places have things like the us that discourage the hiring of others. I e the h1b process. There's always a way, just saying it's not so easy

This is not exactly true.
Your company does not have to pay you in the local currency. I have known a few people who were not paid in the local currency. It's not the best thing to do with changing over money.
If the US has a tax agreement with the country you are in, you are covered for a certain limit and do not have to pay US taxes on that limit. I think it is around $90,000 now. I have not gone past this limit, but I think the fact that I do not have an American husband has helped this.

If the US has a tax agreement with the country you are in, you are covered for a certain limit and do not have to pay US taxes on that limit. I think it is around $90,000 now. I have not gone past this limit, but I think the fact that I do not have an American husband has helped this.
I'm not sure if it varies by country, but my husband is in the middle of, hopefully, securing a long term transfer to UAE. The tax-free limit is $130,000. Also, isn't it the case that in order to get a (non-corporate sponsored) visa allowing you to stay for long periods, you need to have a skill that is in demand & not easily found in the country you want to emigrate to?

The UAE may have a different limit.
Yes, I believe in order to get a visa, you need to prove that someone else in the country (or the EU in my case) can't do that job. This way you aren't taking jobs away. Since my husband is a UK trained lawyer (I believe he was sponsored at first, but it's been over 5 years and we have Permanent Residency) and I am an English language (American) teacher, we both fit in here.
