Like I said before and I keep seeing it on numerous threads - no one is taking responsibility for what they believe in and where they get their sources. Stop blaming the media. You're an adult and you can decide for yourself where to get your information from. There is plenty of "unbiased as possible" sources out there. Stop watching Fox and CNN if you don't like what they're reporting. But constantly blaming the media for not giving you what you want is a cop out.
You overestimate the American people.
Perhaps the *majority* of American people, but here on LI, maybe get off FB and Snapchat and spend more time researching? It's not nearly as onerous as people make it out to be. I personally believe it's an easy excuse to continue to blame the media for your own lack of knowledge. I am not saying you're not intelligent, but you can parse out information and not spend 40 hours a week doing so.
I beg to differ. I am a highly educated individual, and I have quite honestly been spending at least 10-15 hours a week researching the news. Not quite 40, but there is no reason I should have to dig so deep into a multitude of sources, primary documents, etc. to make even an inkling of sense out of what the media is reporting (which is completely sensationalist the majority of the time).
It's clear from the other thread you don't believe the media. You get presented with an article and you still say, *shrug* not a big deal. So don't ask people to do your research for you if you don't like what they give you. I can't tell you what to look for or what to believe. Everyone can only make that decision for themselves. I just think blaming the media and then saying poor me I can't decide what's truth or not is a cop out. If you're going into it cynically or jaded you will never find what you want.
This is entirely untrue. I'm not asking other people to do my research for me-every article posted I had already read. I was asking if I had missed something.
However, the downright aggression of people on this board is mind boggling. I'm not keeping my head in the sand-I'm obviously trying to educate myself as much as I can (and considering that I work full time and have a 2.5 year old and a 3 month old it's not exactly easy to find the time to do this). Why do you feel the need to be so degrading?
I think it's really good to try to seek out answers that are different than your original take on it. I'm being 100% serious. I commend you for it.
I think the blame is spread all around here. Sure, there is sensationalist media. But the press is an important tool in a democracy, too. My best suggestion for people trying to overcome media bias is read from a number of sources, watch different networks, and perhaps most important of all - check media from other countries. Canadian and British sources I generally find to be really helpful, and less biased than the media here. I also find Israeli papers helpful (and can balance out any perceived bias in the Canadian papers ;).

Media's role in creating instability?
The only thing that's creating instability is the buffoon and his cronies in office.

Not the first time the media is used as a scapegoat and I'm sure it won't be the last.
So are you saying that the media is reporting the facts in an unbiased manner in which the American people can generally rely on? You can't really believe that that's the case when so many people here say they have to go to numerous news sources to get to the facts.
I meant what I said, nothing more, nothing less. Read into it however you'd like.
I was actually asking a question. I don't like to read into things.
Of course the media can be biased and that's nothing new but people are to blame for not doing their due diligence. Just like blaming the media for violence. It's a scapegoat for the real issues.
It's not about the media being biased thou. It's the media reporting on stories that haven't been vetted and then presenting them in a way to sway people one way or another. There is a big difference between being biased and being misleading, and I think that over the past few years the media has been misleading on quite a few topics.

Degrading? I dont think anything I've said even borders on degrading. You can interpret things however you like but the heart of that matter is that there is information out there. But like on the Mnuchin thread it doesn't seem like you want to hear it. You specifically asked for reasons why the Dems were boycotting, how is that not asking other people to give you information that is easily accessible online? You said you even read the article before I posted it. Asking for clarification and opinions on why something is happening opens up a dialogue. But asking for information, dismissing it, and then saying other people are snide and degrading is just deflection.

Media's role in creating instability?
I hate the simple term, "The Media". It's like saying, "The Government."
Certain reputable media outlets that are well-established will present factual information that can be constructed to help people formulate opinions. Certain reputable media outlets report with a slant. And certain outlets should not be considered "the media" (blogs, non-accredited sites, social media sites, etc) Imagine having to teach this to my students? It's like having to ask for proof from my in-laws when they spew idiotic crap like, "did you hear that" or "they say that"... Who did you hear it from? Who is "they"?
I believe that the role of social media spreading biased and unbiased news is so crucial.

(I said something similar)
And, also, thank GOD for the media right now. I need someone to help keep me apprised of the insidious creep of fascism. This president has my head spinning with his disregard for our values and the system of checks and balances. I'm just waiting for the SCOTUS pick to eclipse the Muslim ban, which eclipsed the $10b wall, which eclipsed the cabinet confirmation process. I can't even keep up with all of it, but I'm glad the info is available.
