Maternity Leave
Just found out the maternity leave policy for my small, privately owned company (with less than 50 employees so no FMLA protection) is that there is no leave. I will be entitled to 6 weeks of disability pay and anything additional is completely unpaid. I'm completely panicked and wondering how we will afford for me to stay home until the baby is 3 months old.
Wayyyyyyy to go America.

Re: Maternity Leave
I had the same issue. Most private companies do not offer any paid maternity leave.
You can use your sick and personal and vaca time. Even FMLA doesn't give you anything paid- it just makes your employer guarantee you will have a job to come back to. But how you live in that time is on you.
I started my job in April and gave birth in June- I had NOTHING accrued to use- no sick, no personal, no vaca. It was bad. STD from the state was like under $200 a week. Awful
I had to rush back because we couldn't afford for me to stay home much longer I was only out 6 weeks and I had had surgery to remove my gallbladder at 5 weeks PP. So I was 6 weeks PP and 1 week post gallbladder removal and back at work. Yay!

This is exactly what I dealt with when I was on leave. You also don't get the full 6 weeks. You have to forfeit the first week. And if you have any paid time off accrued from your job disability wont start until after that is used up. Fantastic system we have here.

Re: Maternity Leave
That's my company's policy as well. 50% of pay during short term disability (so the first 6 weeks), everything else is unpaid. That was the policy of my company before this one as well. It's pretty standard.

Re: Maternity Leave
Yes the maternity leave policy here really sucks. There were quite a few weeks I took unpaid so I had to pull from our savings account in order to pay our bills.

Re: Maternity Leave
I technically work per diem, though it really isn't, so I'm entitled to nothing. but honestly, I knew that well in advance and planned accordingly. Still sucks.
Oh, I also went back when the baby was 6 weeks, not 3 months.
A lot of people are in the same boat, it's a shame that this is how it is, but you just need to figure out what works for your family.

Re: Maternity Leave
I feel your pain- my company doesn't offer maternity AND I live in a state where they do not offer STD, so I technically am entitled to absolutely nothing. Thank goodness I have my PTO and vacation saved, but that will only last me half of my maternity leave. Something seriously needs to be done about the maternity laws in this country- it's unbelievable

I feel your pain. I got absolutely NOTHING, no pay, while on maternity. This country is an embarrassment.

FMLA doesn't guarantee you any sort of compensation for maternity leave. It just guarantees you the 12 weeks time off. 6 weeks pay is through disability. I work for a company that has over 7000 employees and I was only entitled to the 6 weeks of disability pay. I took the full 12 weeks but the last 6 weeks was unpaid

And if it's state disability it's nothing. My company didn't have any plan for us to get full pay so I was screwed.

Maternity Leave
Too bad the NYS policy hasn't kicked in yet. In this situation I think about cutting all unnecessary costs now and putting them into a savings. Can you both generate more income somehow i.e., temporary second jobs until baby arrives? Any lump sum amounts your expecting i.e. tax refund that can help subsidize it.
