Hi All,

Please recommend your contractor if you've added an extension/addition to your home.

Also, did you hire an architect first and pay to have the plans drawn up? How much did it cost?

I haven't done an extension, but I've seen their work (I've used them for other jobs).

They are a full shop...they supply the architect and all other parts of the process so you don't need to do anything else.

You will probably need to hire an architect so that they can draw up the plans you will need to file with your town in order to get the building permit. Depending on the size and complexity of the extension, an architect can cost anywhere from $500-$5000!

House Extension

We did an extension on our house and had the contractor draw up the plans and do the work. Would NOT recommend that. If I had it to do over, I would definitely get an architect to draw up the plans even though it is a little more expensive. Then you can bring the plans with you to each contractor to get prices. It makes it easier to compare contractors because otherwise there are always little differences in the prices.

I went with an independent architect. I wanted him to design the house the way I wanted, without any bias towards what the builder prefers doing, avoid things they don't like/can't do, etc.
