OLSAT - 2nd grader

DD is in 2nd grade and got a letter from the school whether to opt in or out of the OLSAT - it's to identify those students for the gifted program.

Not sure what to do.

Any feedback/thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

What do you want to ?

I don't see any harm in taking it unless you're against it

Re: OLSAT - 2nd grader

I think it depends on the student. My DS is in gifted this year (3rd) and loves it, but he doesn’t feel pressure to test well and loves school. I just found out my DD tested into gift for next year (she’s currently 2nd grade), and I’m not sure what we will do. She feels immense pressure to do well in school and cries when she gets something wrong, and while she loves school, she is not as studious as my DS and needs to be pushed more.

So, personally, I don’t see harm to letting them test, but different personalities may make the decision to follow through harder. I never second guessed my DS, but I worry about how my DD will handle it.

Why would you opt out?

OLSAT - 2nd grader

We opted out of the OLSAT but that is really only because my daughter is in Special Ed and there was no need for her to sit through the test which she didn't know the answers too. If I had a typical child, I would have no issue with them taking it though. It is not tied to teacher performance and it's a good benchmark (to be combined with others) for your child.

Re: OLSAT - 2nd grader

I would just let DC test for it but make it totally no pressure.

How does this work? Are all 2nd graders in LI offered this test?

I don't think it's all. It varies by district.

No harm in taking it. My oldest child took the test and got into the gifted program, it's wonderful and he loves it! My 2nd grader just took the OLSAT, so we are hoping he also has the opportunity to participate in the program. Good luck !
