Going back early due to snow day question

My son in kindergarten was suppose to have off next Friday but due to all the snow he lost that day. My friend asked me if I was sending my son and I said yes, I didn't think not to. She then explained that most likely there would be a sub and many kids would not be there. I don't want him to be the only one but honestly Ill be ready to send him back. I have two younger ones that don't go back till Monday. I saw his teacher out in the pizza place and she said she would not be there and that it would be an easy day.
Would you send your kids back?

Yes, I would definitely send him in. Unless you had a planned vacation or your child is sick, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't.

DH and I have very different mentalities on this subject. Growing up, my parents sent me in to school unless I had a fever or was throwing up, and that's pretty much how I am with my kids. DH, however, got to stay home when he had the sniffles, if there was a snowflake falling from the sky, his bird died, whatever. Now, he has the same mentality with our kids and it drives me crazy!

Same situation for us. We are going away as we had planned a trip months ago, but if we weren't I would be sending her in.
She needs to be in school. She does not do well at home. At all.

I told my DD the situation and I’m letting her decide. She’s still on the fence, but I don’t have an issue either way.

Re: Going back early due to snow day question

Unless we had a vacation planned that week, if school is open, DC go to school.
School being open when you thought it was going to be closed isn't a valid reason to not go, IMHO.
And, technically, the school was always planned on MAYBE being open that day, so it's not like they said "We're going to be open next Saturday to make up days..."

My situation too except I was going to keep him home to do something where it wouldn't be crowded.

Turns out, they kept school closed.

I’m sending ds. One less day I need to figure out what to do with him. Plus he loves school and the more time he’s away the worse his behavior gets.

I definitely don't think it's the case that most teachers won't be there. Dh will be in school teaching and dd will be in kindergarten.

My son will be going. He got his extra days off when we took the week after Feb break to go to Disney.

This is my son. I was ready to send him back by friday at noon. I know by next Friday he will be ready. My mom said if the bus is coming then he should go. I will send him, I don't care if there are 5 kids or 10 kids he needs to be in school.

Thanks everyone!

My daughter also is going in on Friday. If we had a vacation planned, then of course I wouldn't cancel my vacation. But, if she was just going to stay with her grandparents, she could go to school.

I'm actually so annoyed with our school district. There are 3 snow days built into the calendar, so we knew in advance that this Friday would be a "maybe" for school. But, we had 4 snow days. So, I assumed that the kids would go in on Thursday and Friday. But, no. They are making the teachers go in on Thursday for a "professional development day" and the kids are off. So, they have just lost a day of instruction! It makes no sense to me!

Our district made it very clear to the teachers that if we had school, we needed to be there. So I don’t think there will be a lot of teachers out in my district.

I agree. We had to prove we had travel plans that we would incur a fee to change (basically airfare or something non refundable) in order to take that day off. And if we didn't get approved and called out anyway, we would lose our pay for at least part of the vacation.

In this case, there will be a sub.
I’d assume many kids have travel plans.
I doubt much learning will take place. My kids just do packets those days and do busy work/ color a lot (even in second grade).
I hear you if you want structure... makes sense. But my kid is the WORST with a sub. He’s not bad with his teacher.

I’d keep my kids home and go somewhere with them that’s crowded on weekends. But I am home... so it doesn’t “cost” me anything now.

I am a teacher and we were basically told we can not take off that day. No personal days will be granted and if you take a sick day, you may be asked to provide a Dr's note. I don't think that many teachers will be out, in my district anyway. Many teachers had to spend hundreds of dollars to cancel/change vacations. I think a lot of kids will be there, unless they are on a family vaca.

Same - and if we were home all week - they would need a change in scenery by then.

We didn’t lose any days, not sure why but also don’t care since we wouldn’t be there anyway.

Re: Going back early due to snow day question

My kids are going. I have to work, so it's one less day I have to pay for child care. It's not even a question in our house, they haven't even asked to stay home.

Re: Going back early due to snow day question

My DD school was supposed to be open Thursday and Friday. My decision on sending was dependent on if her before care and aftercare was going to be able to get her. They do several districts so if others were off they might not have been able to do before care. If they couldn't she wouldn't have gone in cause it would have been to much trouble do so.

Turns out that the district decided to keep school closed for the kids both days (teachers have to go in on Friday).

Personally, I don't think its wrong one way or the other. Whatever works best for you should be done.

Our district was supposed to be open Thursday and Friday. I was going to send them in but only because they will be missing 3 days in two weeks because we are surprising them with kalahari. If we weren't doing that then I would have kept them home Thursday and Friday. I am also a SAHM so it's easier for me to keep them home and not have to worry about childcare. Our district has decided to give us back the snow days so they'll be closed now. I think it's all depending on your situation and what's best for you.

This is my son. He is going. He missed 2 days the week before break because he was sick. He will be there. He needs the structure.

Re: Going back early due to snow day question

I'm surprised at the districts not having the students come in only the teachers because I thought the whole point of these make up days was that in order to get state funding you needed X number of instruction days.
If the kids don't come in, how is that an instruction day?

I think some districts petitioned the state to forgive days and others were able to add a conference day if they hadn't used all the allowable ones.

I agree with this. Sub days were awful when I taught or was in school, no learning occurred. I’d rather take my child to a museum or something educational for the day then send him to bounce off the walls in a classroom
