Early induction due to size?????
Has anyone been induced early due to the size of thier baby? Not due to GD...just because DC was really big? My doctors are saying i'm going to have a big baby...they're sending me for another sono next week to check on his size again. I know they mentioned the possibility of a c section but has anyone been induced early to try to avoid a section. Some people I spoke to think they don't do that.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
I was induced at 39 weeks for 2 reasons...one is I have a blood disorder and they wanted to induce me so I knew exactly when to stop taking the blood thinner I was on (heparin) and the other was because my belly was measuring at 40 weeks when I was 36 weeks
I was induced and did wind up with a c-section and a 9lb, 8oz baby

Re: Early induction due to size?????
My son was measuring large the whole time as well! My Dr waiting until my due date to do anything in hopes it would happen naturally which it never did.
I decided against induction because my son never descended and I never dilated. My Dr felt that if induced I would probably labor for a long time and then never be able to deliver DS because of his size. She didnt want me to go through a long labor and then wind up in surgery.
I was terrified to have a section, it turned out to be the best decision as DS was 9lb 14oz. My c-section was such a great experience, the anticipation was the worst part.
Good Luck whatever you decide.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
The sono's could be off a pound either way.
I was induced - but 12 days late. My son was 9lbs 14ozs. I don't know that I would necessarily let them induce me before my due date personally.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
Sonograms can be off by 1-2lbs. Personally, I would not want to be induced for having a big baby because the chances of the birth being a c-section are greater. In my childbirthing classes, we were told that the size of a baby is not really a reason to induce labor. Our bodies are equipped for handling such things unless otherwise known.

My doctor was able to feel his head...that means he descended right? I'm completely closed shut though. They haven't even mentioned being induced yet...this is just something I was wondering about....i'm going to ask after my next sono.

I never wanted to be induced because I feel like there's such a great chance of it leading to a section anyway and because I heard it was much more painful. I was thinking though if he is as big as they think he is going to be i'll need a section. If I was induced early theres a good chance I can have him vaginally.

I have no medical reason to need it...as of yet. I wonder how much further along i'm measuring...I never thought to ask. I will next time.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
I always measured ahead and DS measured big. I was induced 6 days past my due date because my fluid levels were low. I pushed out a 7lb11oz baby- even though the day before they measured and said he'd be over 9lbs.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
I was measuring very big, at 37 weeks, my baby was about 8.5 lbs. My dr. definitly would not induce me at all and I had a big baby previously (10 lbs 8 oz) I did ask to be induced again since I was with my son and everything went well but he said no.
I went 4 days late with my daughter and she was 10 lbs 1 oz. Both were deliered vaginally, no c section

Re: Early induction due to size?????
I was given the option of an induction or a cesarean due to size and pressure from DS. I opted for the section because I just *knew* that it would wind up that way anyway. Apparently I was right - my OB confirmed many times during the section that I had made the right choice - that baby wasn't coming out any other way I was far more fearful of an emergency c than a scheduled one so that was the route we took but ultimately yes, I did have the option.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
I know so many people who were told that there babies were going to be huge and be prepared that they may have a c section etc and their babies were in the 6-7 lb range.
For some reason, I am prone to having bigger babies and I nvever had GD but all of my friends growth sonos were soo off !!!

My SIL was told she was going to have a huge baby and that a csection was necessary. The baby wound up being 7lbs, 9oz and the Dr apologized....

Re: Early induction due to size?????
DD was measuring about a week ahead fpr my third trimester. Dr. mentioned induction IF I wanted it and IF I was showing progress. My growth sono at 37 weeks showed her at almost 8 pounds.
I was induced, but only 3 days early (I admit it- for convenience) and I was 3 cm dilated/50%effaced.
My induction was FINE- no pain (love the epi), but even before the epi, I was able to breathe through the contractions. DD was delivered vaginally and weighed 7 lbs, 6oz.
So much for sonos being correct......

Re: Early induction due to size?????
you have every right to refuse an iduction and a c/s due to "size" of the baby. In fact you can tell the doctor you are going to forgo the "size" sonos because you refuse to be scared about the baby's size. You are not having a 15lb- that would be different LOL
Don't feel pressured because the doctor wants you to do it. Without you or the baby life in danger, and a possible "big" baby is not your life in danger without other factors, you can tell them you want to labor on your own and see how things go. MANY women have 9lb+ babies and are just fine.
You should read up on induction and the risks/benefits and not just ask your doctor.
I had GD. IF your GD is under the control of a doctor and your sugars are not dangerous (meanng unchecked, no doctors involved etc..) it does not = big baby and there is NO medical reason for a c/s due to GD. Check. You cannot find one bit of published medical research that says it is. I asked many OB friends when I had and a doctor felt to pressure me about a c/s because of it.

Why do the doctors feel that if it's a big baby, you won't be able to have a vaginal delivery? There are plenty of women on here that have had big babies and have them vaginally and some without the aid of pain medications.
Personally, I would hold off on an inducution unless medically necessary.

I would think so. I never felt my son "drop" as I was laying on the operating table teh day he was born, I could feel him in my rib cage, I couldnt breathe. My body just never prepared for birth in anyway.
As some women have said, many women deliver 10lb babies and many techs have misjudged the size of the baby from the sonos. But on the flip side, I know women who can't push out 8lb babies and my sono was off, but they estimated SMALLER - DS was born 2 days later weighing 10oz more.
I asked my Dr about induction and we waited until 2 days before my due date to decide. I based my decision on having 2 growth sonos 1 week apart by 2 different techs at the hospital which both estimated a baby over 9lbs. And the fact that I had 1 contraction my entire pregnancy, and never dilated which I felt was a sign.
My dr told me that if your body isnt progressing naturally that induction has a much higher chance of winding up in a section after your body has labored and is worn down.
My advice is to trust your gut and talk out all the options with your Dr. I admit some Drs are quick to jump on a section but sometimes its with good reason.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
Thanks guys. I just have so much going on in my head lately. I think i'm just making myself crazy. This is the first time i've been pregnant and I guess now that i'm getting so close to the end i'm over thinking things.
Seems like most people are against induction...to be honest it's something i've never wanted either. I don't even know if it's something my doctors would even consider anyway.
I just know every doctor I see says how big my baby is going to be and I think it's starting to freak me out and I know it shouldn't.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
At my 39 week appt, after a 2nd growth sonogram (est. 8lb 11oz) my OB scheduled a c/s for the following week, my due date. My Dr did not want to induce. The c/s was scheduled, and the Dr said if I went into labor before, that would be okay, but I may have a c/s anyway.
I did not go into labor and had the c/s as scheduled. DS was 9lb 7oz

They said the same to me and they were right. IMO I defer to the dr as the expert. Don't drive yourself crazy just wait and see, then discuss with your DH what makes sense for you. I was not against induction, I had it both times and no issues or effects from it. Everyones experience is different so it is hard to compare stories.

Re: Early induction due to size?????
I was induced because DD was measuring at 9lbs5oz. I was induced two days before my due date but actually had her by c-section on my due date because the induction failed. My hospital did everything possible to try to NOT give me a c-section but in the end after two days my labor just didn't progress because my pelvis was to narrow for her. She weighed 8lb7oz when born so the growth sono was almost a pound off!

I was measuring 9.5 with my first and this was my experience. Labor was long and tough. I ended up with a c/s b/c he got stuck descending - he was 10+ (no GD)
My second was also 10+ we tried for VBAC until the end.
Something my MW mentioned that if you are taller, you have a better chance delivering a bigger baby.
