Specialized High School teachers or knowing how things work there?

Specialized High School teachers or knowing how things work there?
I need opinions or experience on how the specialized how schools are, in terms of support to the kids, competitiveness, hours of homework, them being able to have extra curricular activities, etc. Thanks!

Yes, sorry, in the city, like Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, etc.

Yes, sorry, in the city, like Bronx Science, Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tech, etc.
I teach 8th grade in bayside, and I know a ton of the kids that applied to bronx, stuy, etc. didn't get in. Very competitive. I went to a 3 week workshop at stuyvesant over the summer and it's a beautiful school in a beautiful area. it's HUGE though... I'm not sure if I would want my child to have to commute that far either personally.

Yes, those I mentioned are huge, specially BT. I wonder is, once the student is in one of them, how hard, challenging and competitive they are. If those are schools where kids can't have an outside life, but have to study and do homework for hours.

I went to a private HS, and I was just average compared to everyone else there. Had I gone to my public high school, I would've been in all of the AP classes.
Personally, I would apply to a nice HS in a nice area, like Francis Lewis or something similar. I would prefer my child be a big fish in a small pond

I went to Bronx Science a million moons ago (I am in my 30s now) and it was definitely competitive. I did participate in activities (sports, Student govt) bc that is my personality but honestly I killed myself. I had good grades. I graduated with an 89 average but I literally killed myself to get that average. We had tons of tests. I got a 1320 on my SATs and was embarrassed to tell people at school. Many students got over 1400 (I even heard one girl saying if she got less than 1450 she would just throw herself off a bridge) and of course several students got perfect 1600. Yeah, I went to the bathroom and cried that day. I put a lot of pressure on myself (but honestly that is also the school atmosphere). I didn't go to an Ivy League but many kids who graduated with me did.
The teachers expect a lot (understandably) and there are no excuses. My sister went to Bayside HS and skipped out half the time, barely studied and got an 85 average. She had a great time in HS. Sometimes I think I should've taken her route. She was so carefree. LOL.

If you look at the numbers 24,000 students apply to Stuy (as an example) for 900 seats (numbers arent exact but they are close) so the top 900 kids that get in can expect a challenging, rigorous education. With that said, if you can get it, you can do it. The commute to most is a hardship (depending on where you live and which one you go to)> I work w MS kids and many go, they are very high achieving students who want the experience.
