Greek Christening?
Anyone familiar with Greek christenings?
Its for my husbands book keepers grandaughter....what would you say is an appropriate gift? I was thinking $100?
As far as I understand, its a bigger to do than I am used to so I'm not really sure...

Now I need to know what to wear...should my husband wear a suit? Should I wear a cocktail type dress?

Greek christenings are like weddings. Typically it is a very big, fancy event.

How many people are going? Yes Greek baptisms can be very fancy, but you give what you can. If it’s not family, we would give about 300 for a family of 4 ( two young kids).

I have never been to a Greek christening but I wouldn’t give what I would give for a wedding. I think anything in the range of $100-$150 is good and based on your relationship with the parents and child it’s more than generous.
Just because someone chooses to have a huge celebration it’s not your obligation to foot the bill.

I just also wanted to add that the reason Greeks do a big celebration for the Christening is because it's the only religious celebration the child gets. There is no separate communion or confirmation. The next religious ceremony would be their wedding.

This. Its christening, communion and confirmation rolled into one. I think $150-$200 is a fair amount considering your relationship-

I would give no more than 100. Anything more is insane to me for a christening - its for a baby.

All of this. I'm Greek and for my kids, most guests who showed up as a family gave at least $200 & up. Individuals & couples gave up to $200 but give what you can. I didn't do a gigantic celebration w music etc... just a nice restaurant for about 50 people.

Just had my daughters christening. I’m Greek, husband Jewish. A lot of people did not know what to expect haha. That being said, we got a huge range of gifts. Some people gave a toy. You’re “safe” with $100pp.
If they are doing this to make money, then that’s on them. I would not worry about it. You give you can and want.

I agree do what you can afford.
My husband is Greek. We married in greek church, kids baptized Orthodox.
The event is bigger because its everything at once. There will be no communion, confirmation. They have one sacrament for this campared to catholics.
