Tariffs on certain food items

This is NOT a political post. I’ll keep my opinion to myself, but I can say thank God I live in Europe Chat Icon . I wouldn’t want to go without some nice food specialties.

I’ll X-post to politics for the political discussion there.

https://www.politico.com/news/2019/10/02/trump-eu-tariffs-020272

Summary:

[...]Cheese and dairy products figure prominently on the retaliation of list to the delight of U.S. dairy producers who face substantial sales barriers in the EU.

Imports of single-malt Scotch, Irish whiskey, liqueurs, French wines, sweaters, coffee, pipe cutters, various tools, sweet biscuits, olives and pork will also be slapped with 25 percent duties.[...].

What does this mean? Food prices for these items are going up. Like a nice Parmesan cheese? Forget that nice pasta dish at a reasonable price. You get the idea.

This reddit post goes further into the food items:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Cooking/comments/df1eze/everything_youve_wanted_to_know_about_cheese_from/

Again the political discussion can go on the politics board.

Re: Tariffs on certain food items

I export pork and beef to Asia, so yeah, these tariffs suck big time. The threat to the Free Trade Agreements ......
That, and the increase in the cost of bunker fuel, definitely hurting profits here.
The only upside is that there is an outbreak of Asian Swine Flu in parts of Asia and Europe, resulting in the slaughter of thousands of infected hogs. That means there will be more demand for my clean US product.

My only political comment will be that 45 is single handedly ruining the world economy with his fukking assinine and childish temper tantrums.

YUP -- this is going to affect so many industries (already is) and this increase is going to go right back to the consumer. Good luck paying 25% more for a car or anything else big ticket. Even the little things all add up.

Re: Tariffs on certain food items

Foods imported from Germany now have a 25% tariff on them.
That's half of my pantry ........ and I need to replenish it.

Wow, that’s a lot. I think an extra suitcase and trip to Germany is in order.
