On the Subject of Gifts

Would you prefer to get something you want ie. tell someone what to buy for you or for the gift giver to give you what THEY think you'd want or like?

Re: On the Subject of Gifts

I prefer a gift card because I have very specific tastes.
Actually I prefer adults not exchange gifts at all to be honest.
If I want something, I buy it.

I agree. I actually don't want a gift card either. It's usually to a store I don't go to anyway.

I'd rather just not exchange gifts too.

Re: On the Subject of Gifts

I love exchanging gifts with my parents, siblings & their kids at Christmas! It’s just a fun tradition & none of us go overboard, although we do spoil my parents because they deserve it.
We all end up asking each other what we can use, what stores we like, etc. So we sort of ask for things but not really too specific. Of course I can buy these things for myself, but we love the tradition of giving. As a kid I loved seeing my parents exchange gifts too...nothing extravagant, but it was really sweet to see the thought they put into their gifts to each other.
To the OP, if someone asks, then I’ll give them ideas...but if they don’t ask & get me something they think I’ll like, then I appreciate anything. DH & I will do both for each other...get something we know the other person wants/needs & something we think they’d like.

I like getting gifts from other people because I like surprises. Most people who buy me gifts know me and my taste and I have gotten some really great things I would never think to buy myself.

I agree. Gift cards get to be stupid with adults, because you are basically just throwing $50 at them, and they are throwing it back at you. Save your money and don't bother. I like gifts that have thought put into them Chat Icon

I agree and would prefer it if the adults in our families didn't exchange at all.

It really depends though on who is giving me the gift. DH's family are the most thoughtless people ever. I've posted about them before and the gifts they give. I'm pretty sure it's done purposely, but they mostly get me clothing that is many sizes too small and obviously not my style (no gift receipt ever). I have no choice but to donate it. They also give me a lot of Bath and Body Works types of products when they know I can't use them (because of my skin allergies). They know I prefer gift cards, but they'd rather waste their money on stuff I can't use.

That being said, I do like getting gifts from my friends and close family. They know what I like and they put a lot of thought into it. It's nice to be surprised with things I can use or would like to try.

Re: On the Subject of Gifts

I like both! Lol

If it’s personal and someone I know. I love a gift

If it’s like a office exchange. Where it’s a generic gift. I prefer a gift card bc then I always get wine or a board game lol

Re: On the Subject of Gifts

Depends.
for people who know me, i like being surprised.
for people who don't know me, i'd rather tell them so their gift is not wasted.
the last secret santa we did at work, we each emailed our top three gifts within the price range to one person and people would come and ask her for gift ideas.
everyone was really happy and still surprised since it was one of three possibilities.

i personally think that gift cards/cash are impersonal so i don't like to give/receive them as gifts. every time i get cash or a gift card, i end up spending it on my DS or on household things like groceries so it's never used as a gift.
