Winterized pool question
This is our first winter with a pool (semi inground - it was installed in August). Yesterday, DH drained all the water from the top of the cover and we noticed that the water level in the pool is a lot lower than it was when we had it closed for the winter. The water level is definitely below the skimmer area. Does this mean we have a leak or is it normal?

Re: Winterized pool question
We never lose very much water over the winter. The cover should prevent excess evaporation. You might have a leak somewhere.

Ugh, now I’m wondering if our cover was put on properly. DH and I thought it looked loose when we had it put on, but this is our first time owning a pool, so we didn’t know for sure. If there is a leak, there’s nothing we can do about it until we open it again, right? I haven’t noticed any wet spots around the pool.

Winterized pool question
We lose so much water every single year. Every time we drain it, more water seeps through the cover as well as rainwater, snow, etc. It is quite low every year when we open it, but crystal clear. We just fill and start fresh for the season. It never loses water during the season so no leaks here. I always wonder why I am the only one with this problem, but it's the same for us every year.

This is true for us as well. Every year for about 5 years, DH says I think we're going to need a new liner, and its been fine. Sometimes, I think the winter cover is porous and we are actually siphoning pool water when we drain the top layer of water off the cover. To OP: Sometimes, I think it just happens. I know early this fall/ winter season I did add water to the pool. But definitely keep an eye on it, being the pool and cover is new. I agree there is not much to do now but add water if you have to

Thanks. How low does your water get?
I did some research and read that the cover can be porous and you’re taking out the pool water as well as the rain water. I also read that the pool water can be displaced if the cover gets too heavy and can seep over the edge. I’m just hoping we don’t have a leak already since everything is brand new. Our outside water is already shut off for the winter and Dh does not want to turn it on. Guess we’ll see what happens when we open it in the spring.

Winterized pool question
Ours doesn't go below the skimmer but we start with it high to begin with and I do add some. I think you are also right about it being displaced.
With some our pool covers (black ones) as they age you can see the sunlight through it, when we took it on or off. I know we were siphoning pool water because the water level was a lot better when we got a new cover. I'd just wait and keep an eye on it. I'm not how sure how low you can let it go, but assume it is a leak, it will probably be a very slow leak.
Pool ownership is a lot of trial and error: constantly adjusting correcting or guessing. Keep your fingers crossed. I have a feeling it will be ok. (Come to think of it, we probably always start the winter off high, because we've experienced just what you are posting about! LOL)

Agree that everytime we drain it, we siphon some out. Ours goes very low, about a foot below skimmer. We never refilll it over the winter. Our water is already off, too and its enough work in the summer!

Sorry, hit post by accident. I was going to add we have a semi inground pool, too and its been happening since our first winter around 5 years ago. Try not to worry and I hope all will be perfect in the summer.

Winterized pool question
That always happens with mine. If they put a winter plate over the skimmer it might have not been complete water tight, so it slowly drained out. I stopped bothering with the skimmer plate because every year it would drain out anyway. If the water level doesnt get lower than right below the skimmer, it was probably just that and not a real leak in the pool. Also I've lost water from below the cover when draining the water on the cover if the pump was placed directly on the cover because the suction pulls water from below the cover. Next time making sure the pump is not directly touching the cover but rather hovering in the water on the cover. And you don't want to fully drain that water either. You should leave at least a few inches deep water on the cover to prevent strong winds from whipping it around which could cause it to tear.

its normal. Most likely when you drained the water off the cover you also drained some water from the pool. The covers allow for some pool water you seep through.
