Hooking up a water line to a fridge

We just got a new fridge yesterday. It is not near our sink, but our washing machine is on the wall directly behind it so we have a water line right there. However that line is apparently in the wall and the installers did not want to mess with it so I had to call a plumber.

The plumber came and said he’s going to have to open up at least 2 holes in our walls to find the line, but the hot and cold lines are out in the open. Not sure why they can’t just cut into the cold line and hook it up with an adapter. He quoted $450, which I think is crazy.

Any insight? The lines we have now are plastic and they want to use copper. I googled and it is possible to still use the plastic lines.

I would personally just return the fridge, get one without the water filter in it, and get a water filter sink attachment instead

We have a basement and we have a copper wire coming up from the floor that is tapped into the pipes underneath.

You can tap into any nearby supply line. It's not difficult to do. I added a water line for my fridge by myself. I had exposed lines in the basement that were close to the fridge location, but not near the sink.

Ours is taped into the pipe for the outside water line in the yard I believe.
It's right on the same wall....

as said above, its not hard to do at all. I think its actually just a screw in kit to the copper line and hooking the tube up to the fridge.

Having said that, if you don't want to try and do it yourself, you need to pay someone. That sounds high, you probably need a handyman instead of a plumber.
It all could be super easy, 30 min job with the right kit/tools. or more work. If you don't have access to pipes in your basement, you may need to open a wall.

Thanks everyone. My husband spoke ti a family friend who is a plumber and he explained what we would need to do, so my DH is going to hook it up himself. Fingers crossed ??

Just an alternative, you don't have to hook up the water line if you don't want to. When we first moved in we thought there was no water line for our fridge, so we just made do... well 9 years later the fridge died and so we bought a new one, when we took out the old fridge, lo and behold we found a water line that was never hooked up. My dad who is somewhat handy ended up installing it for us, so if your DH is handy I don't think it should be a problem if there is an existing water line nearby.

Use copper instead of plastic. There are long semi-rigid copper lines at Home Depot and they tap into existing lines easily, no matter how far they are. Your fridge can't be that far from the sink, you can run behind the counters or under the cabinets. I have at least 15-20ft of copper running in my kitchen from my fridge to my sink cabinet.

Dh did it today with only $40 worth of supplies. I can’t believe that plumber quoted me $450.
