Cheap Family Vacations
Looks like this board is busier than the travel one.
Is it even possible to go away on $2,000 for 3-4 people? 2-3 adults and a teen?
“Real” vacation where I don’t have to cook, clean, do laundry

So you are looking to go on a school break? If so, that's more of a challenge. Hotels and airfare are jacked up to insane prices when school is out.

Re: Cheap Family Vacations
I'm guessing it's doable if you do things like drive instead of fly or go away for 4-5 days instead of a week.
What kinds of things do you want to do?

Cheap Family Vacations
We did Bermuda for 4 nights/5 days. Very short flight and cheaper than other caribbean destinations.

Re: Cheap Family Vacations
I don;t think that you can do anything that involves airfare. I think I would look into a last minute cruise out of NYC or maybe Woodloch pines.

Re: Cheap Family Vacations
You can find cheap airfare on Frontier out Islip, but going during any school break is going to drive up the cost.
Look into a long weekend, so the kids don't miss too much school. I really like Marco Island.

Re: Cheap Family Vacations
Maybe a beach vacation where you can drive? When I was younger my family didn't have a lot of money to spend on vacations so each summer we'd take a trip to Myrtle beach (driving to save money) rent a condo for a week. We'd eat dinners out, but buy groceries for breakfast and lunch. Spent a lot of the day at the beach and pool.

Re: Cheap Family Vacations
Camping - that is the cheapest vacation around.
Are you willing to cook at all - like breakfast/lunch in an apt type accommodation? That would cut down costs.
You can probably find an air bnb or cheap hotel at the jersey shore or in areas like the poconos/upstate. Cheap entertainment would be outdoors - hiking, beach, lake activities, etc. this would free up your budget for dinners out and the lodging.
Most places are going to be at least $150-$200 a night for even a basic hotel room, so that eats a lot of your budget right there.
Washington DC has a lot of free museums so that would be cheap entertainment. But you’d have to do hotel and food.

It seems for that little money I would have to cook and honestly that is not a vacation to me. Might just have to wait to save more money if I want it all

This. it is totally possible to do it, However, there are limitations.
using teh numbers above, which are reasonable, $200 a night for 5 nights is $1000. That leaves $1000 for food and entertainment, or $200 a day.
You can do that, but some things have to be cut down. dinners, lunches, breakfasts can't be too expensive. you can't do $150-$200 dinners every night with drinks and apps and dessert.
You can have pay activities, but offset with quick dinners and lunches, bring some cereal and muffins for breakfast.
DC can work with free museums. But hotel can be pricer and there is parking fees. I used an app for parking and parked a bit away from my hotel for like$20 a day vs $50 a day at the hotel.
$2000 is both a decent amount of money and not a lot depending on what you want to do. You can totally make it work and have fun if you're realistic about what activities you want to do and what type of meals you're happy eating.

Cheap Family Vacations
I second Myrtle Beach - they have accommodations at varying price points and activities at different price points too.
We usually go out for dinner and eat breakfast and lunch in our condo (usually sandwiches and cereal - so not a lot of cooking - so it still does feel like a vacation)

Re: Cheap Family Vacations
Ocean city, the drive isn’t too far and it’s an affordable beach vacation. Lake George may be another decent one.
