Queens parents - are you sending them in?

I know a lot can change between now and Monday, but I’m wondering if you’re going to send your kids to school or not next week.
Friday DS class of 24 had 9 out. Then by the afternoon another class joined his since so many left early.
I don’t need to send him in next week as I WFM, but if he misses a week of school he will fall very far behind.
I’m at such a loss of what to do! Almost every parent I speak to said they’re keeping them home at least for Monday.
Will they even be doing lessons with more than half the class out??

I teach in queens and had 9 out yesterday. We kept up with the plans I had and I will continue to teach as usual if it's a similar turnout. If I fall in single digits with kids, I'll rethink my plans.

My own kids have off though in Suffolk.

I made the decision to keep them home once my boss told me this past Friday that I can WFH. I am sending my other son in, who has special needs and attends a school with 30 kids on Long Island. It’s still a risk but he needs his therapies and I can’t WFH with him home. We do what we can...

Re: Queens parents - are you sending them in?

DS will be going to school unless they close.
The only thing I will pull him from is the after-school care.
DH picked him up friday and the camp director said she had 26 out of 160 kids.

I'm just wondering what will happen once schools close. Do we close them for two weeks then go back? The virus hasn't started spreading fully yet and in two weeks it could be even worse.
Do we cancel school for the rest of the year? Then does this year even count? Do they promote based on 3rd quarter grades? Some kids needed that 4th quarter to bring their grades up enough to graduate.
Do we go back in the summer and cancel summer vacation too make up for the months lost?
do we attempt to homeschool? I can't see this happening. Do they just give kids lots and lots of worksheets to review over the time this quarantine would require? Are parents able to spend that much time teaching their children? Do we try virtual classrooms? How do you guarantee each kid has a laptop/computer and internet access?
How do you WFh and entertain/teach your child for at least two weeks?

Are we just stuck in our homes forever?

Not for nothing but a week and a half of this time dues fall during the scheduled spring break. Part of this time was scheduled anyway.

Exactly, hopefully I’m proven wrong but idk how much this helping. I feel like it is hurting more. And yes I am one that is on the high risk list to be careful as well as my stepson. So I understand all sides.

I realized this a little while ago. So it’s really just an extension of the 2 weeks they were planning on closing anyway. Makes sense.

I cannot tell you how a noxious FB is to me right now. Neighbor parties, drinking together, play dates .. may as well Be in school
It’s not going anywhere as long as people don’t listen to what’s being said.

There is a big difference between being closed for a week and a half and being closed for a month.

I assume school will continue into summer to make up the time?

That’s what I was wondering? My ODD will be fine but my YDD simply cannot go 6 months without any formal learning. She’ll become a potato.

If I try to instruct her how to open a Capri Sun she loses her shit. How can I teach her how to subtract?!?!?!

I don’t know my dd’s go to catholic school in queens and they announced closure for this week on Friday before the nyc announced closure and my 5th grader has assignments on google classroom for the whole week and my 3rd grader got packets in all subjects for the week...with remarks that they will upload more if closure extends. I even need to log and sign a sheet for gym that they’re doing activities/exercises for the week. If they’re doing all this work they better not go into summer! It’s bad enough I have to work since I’m in healthcare, now I have to make sure they’re doing their schoolwork instead of playing roblox and group chatting friends all day!Chat Icon Chat Icon

nyc schools are supposed to start remote learning next week- whatever that means. i don't see how they will enforce this or make sure that all kids have access to computers and wifi. I know for us this will be very difficult. DH is working from home so he gets the computer. We don't have a printer to print work for DS. So either i'm out everyday at staples (as long as it's open) losing money on printing packets, or DS will have to cram 6 hours of work into 3 hours after DH is done working. if the kids have to log in and "be present" for school during specific times, we're definitely out of luck.
there's no way the teachers' union will allow school to extend into summer. they'll say it's in their contract not to work and that will be it.

i'm also wondering what this means for the state tests and their grades. how do we know for sure the kids are doing the work at home and it's not just mom or dad answering to get it over with?

Well, day 1 of homeschooling not so great...so I too am wondering how this will work. I went to work physically, DH worked from home...he has a work computer and a setup in basement, my 2 kids each have their own laptops but the younger one got packets, so doesn’t really need computer. The way it’s working so far is they are uploading worksheets to school website where you can print them...for my older DD they are using google classroom where answers are submitted straight online...but there’s a combination of printing things, using text books and I have no clue how they want things submitted...no actual virtual thing where they are “live” watching a teacher.

But it’s hard for DH to work and be on top of them, and I got home at 5:30 and now we are finishing things they couldn’t do or didn’t know they had to do. No clue how people are going to do it.

Queens parents - are you sending them in?

My district said any work assigned during this time can only be used for formative assessment not summative so nothing goes in the gradebook. We cannot guarantee that students have good internet access even though we have provided them with computers. We also can’t guarantee that they’re not currently acting in a parent role babysitting younger siblings. They may also be dealing with the fact that their parents’ may lose their job. Although students are digital natives, they may not be comfortable with learning.
