Divorced parents and coronavirus

Hi there, I live in Queens and my ex lives in Brooklyn. If we go under a lockdown what happens????? I have a disabled child and can not spend 5 straight weeks alone with him and his brothers, working from home, and homeschooling them (well at least homeschooling the two typical ones - to date, no one in NYC has acknowledged the developmentally disabled children in the city who have just abruptly lost all their therapies and services). I’ll lose my mind. Does anyone know, in the event of a lockdown, what happens?

I feel that all the articles I read about social distancing assume that everyone has neuro typical children and a lovely nuclear family to hunker down with for five weeks. I want to do my part to slow the spread and believe me I have been taking this seriously from the start but I’m starting to fray. My boyfriend is holed up at his cabin in the woods with his kids and god only knows when I’ll see him again. I’d give anything to have another adult in the house. The thought of a lockdown occurring when the kids are with my ex and the prospect of not being able to see them is terrifying. The prospect of it happening at my house, and having no help at all for 5 weeks, also terrifying.

I know how you feel (although I don't have a disabled child). I'm hoping that they'll still allow us to go places in our cars so at least my ex and I can still stick to the week on/week off schedule. In addition to that, I would imagine that even in a lockdown, they would still have to let us go to the grocery store or other places that are necessities - especially since this might last longer than a month.

I came on here to discuss this very topic. Since my ex will be driving here to see his kids in his own car and not take public transportation, i don't see why this should be an issue. Seeing their dad at these difficult time is definitely important for their mental health and to maintain some kind of normalcy. Not to mention to hep maintain our own mental health, especially in your case. I personally don't think the visits should be canceled.

Hang in there!

Your child will get to see their other parent. In other countries that are on lockdown, people can still leave their home. There are rules.

Cuomo said today that he has no intention of locking down or quarantining any city in NYS and that no local official can do so without state permission. He said it's not possible to do so effectively and not something he is even thinking about.
