I wonder how many people this guy passed it to...

I read this article in Newsday about a guy from Long Island who got the virus but they didn't know what it was- thought flu, negative- he continued to go to work- finally got tested for Corona and it was positive.
But this part....

On March 2, his doctor tested him for the flu, which came back negative, and told him to rest. Yackel continued to work but often left early because of his returning fever

He probably spread it like crazy not knowing what it was....

Here's the rest if you want to read it

Christopher Yackel, who works in medical sales, said he began feeling ill after coming home from the Empire Medical Training Show at the Westin Times Square earlier this month. Another attendee later tested positive for the virus, according to news reports.

Yackel said he felt like he had a “mild version of the flu.” His fever, which tended to come on in the afternoons, never rose above 100.7. He had a dry cough, shortness of breath, chills, night sweats and some aches.

On March 2, his doctor tested him for the flu, which came back negative, and told him to rest. Yackel continued to work but often left early because of his returning fever. A subsequent CT scan showed he had nodules in his lungs, but Yackel said that might have been exacerbated by his work to renovate a foreclosed home that had mold.

Yackel said he finally got tested for coronavirus on March 9 — after a week of symptoms — because his doctor’s office in Patchogue had received a limited number of testing kits. The quarantine began that day.

His test results came back positive on Friday the 13th.

Rosanne Yackel has developed some symptoms, her husband said. Her test results are pending. She had helped organize community events after the Jan. 17 death of Thomas Valva, 8, who police say was forced to sleep by his father and stepmother in a freezing Center Moriches garage.

The cousin and cousin’s son are currently asymptomatic.

Yackel, who said he is feeling better after taking Tylenol and drinking lots of fluids, said he and his relatives have notified everyone they’ve been in contact with and local officials that they tested positive. They have also taken to Facebook to encourage others to avoid spreading the virus.

yep

How may people had what they thought was flu but tested negative this winter?
That all gets chalked up to a "flu like" virus.

how many people- like me - get sick and don't go to the doctor unless they are either on their death bed or know they need an antibiotic like for strep or something?

Of course it was here long before we knew it

I agree...I think it's been here too. They weren't testing and still not aggressively testing so we can't really know.

I completely agree. China can trace it back to mid November, so I figure it has been in the US since shortly after that and the deaths that happened were misattributed to other things.

Me! I did! And my fever never broke 100.7 either. I had a very mild flu. My flu test was negative. I actually chalked it up to getting the flu shot. It makes you wonder!

Talking with my family, many believe that this has been in the metro area for an extended period of time. My SIL's uncle died due to breathing issues at the end of February. He had a ton of pre-existing conditions due to 9/11, but the death was still very unexpected.

Then my parents were talking to their neighbors. The neighbors had been in quarantine for over 2 weeks since someone in their law firm on LI had a suspected case, which which was later confirmed after the first official case.

This has most likely been around for well over a month. I feel like I didn't really hear anything about this disease until the end of January and I definitely didn't hear about any testing being done in the US until the end of Feb. Between Jan and Feb, I can't imagine that there were no cases in the US.

I wonder how long it's actually been around too. I know 3 people that had pneumonia in Dec/Jan for the first time in their entire lives. They were tested for the flu and it was negative. Their cough was the worst symptom, so they were eventually given chest x-rays (2 of them at the doctor and one of them at the walk-in). Even still, they say it wasn't that bad, they didn't feel like they couldn't breathe. They said it was just an annoying dry cough that wouldn't go away. They're all convinced it was caronavirus now.

Re: I wonder how many people this guy passed it to...

with the way this thing spreads, he probably started a big chain reaction like the guy in New Rochelle.
I also agree it has been here.

But what’s the answer? Don’t listen to authorities ? I don’t think that’s the right choice. Hospitals aren’t lying. There really are people filling them up and they are overwhelmed already. Plus we can look at the other countries and have seen how bad it is.

But yea... I think we’ve had it here for a while.

No we should definitely listen.
It's just crazy how many people had this or may have had it and not known- that's why it spread like it did prior.
I just thought the article was interesting in a crazy way

I think I may have had it in February when I went to Disney. Started with a sore throat and then turned to worst sore throat I've ever had in my life for several days. When I got back from our trip my doctor said sinus infection. I was in bed for three days straight. I'm not really sure what it was, but I haven't been that sick in like 20 years.

now that we know what it is, many will be angry at him. but let's be honest. how many of us don't go to the dr and keep right on truckin' because we have work to do, we have bills to pay, we ran out of sick days that we used when the weather was nice, etc.

i know i would have kept showing up to work even if i didn't feel great.

My boss spent a month in Asia back in November and came back really sick. Took an additional 2 weeks off when she got back. Looking back now, I think she had it. She was coughing and she said she had body aches like she never had before.

I swore my son picked it up in Disney in February also (even though he's 8). Started with a cough on our last day and a mild fever by the time the plane landed. He has never had a fever with a cold, but he had 100.4 and urgent care said it was just a bad cold. All of his symptoms were gone in three days. Makes you wonder.

We were in Disney in February also, but managed to stay healthy. But, I'm a nut about hand washing and alcohol wipes. It sure sounds like that is what you both had. I know people with the same symptoms dating back to December. So, I'm sure millions have this/have had it all this time. We only see the numbers rising now because they are actually testing.

I haven't been on this site in years! Anyway, I had a fever for 6 days with 3 days of 103 early January. My husband was sick too, but not as much as me. They checked us for the flu. We were both negative, but they said we must just have another strand or something. Then mine progressed to pneumonia, and I had a shortness of breath. I kept very distant from everyone. I though I got it from my kids though. I want a blood test or something to see if I had it already!!

I agree. In December my mom, who has multiple health issues, got a cold and it transitioned quickly to what they were calling RSV and had to be hospitalized. I thought only babies got that but the hospital said they had about 10 elderly people with that this winter alone which was a little odd. I'm sure people have been walking around with this for a while now.

I read this too. He probably passed it to many. Something similar went around my office in December. I really think this thing has been around, sucks that he works in medical supplies!
