Unemployment- returning to work?

So my husbands job is bringing them back part time. Can he still collect for the days he’s losing? We’re worried that he won’t get anything (including the extra $600) because 3 days at his rate of pay is over the $500 that the question asks when claiming your benefits. After taxes he will be bringing home less then half of what he normally does. Does anyone have some insight?

I do believe you can file for reduce hours, but I have been hearing that it is affecting the extra $600. For this reason, my staff doesn't want to come back. But I bet employers would then consider rehiring and disputing UE.

Yes the govt is unfortunately leaving us small businesses in a bad spot with this. We’re essential and have remained open with many layoffs. Now as we’re starting to call people to come back we’re being told no, they want to stay home. This is a mess.

Normally that would have them automatically removed from collecting UI but with covid, all they have to do is say they were “exposed” and you can’t prove a thing.

It’s a shit show. We haven’t been deemed essential yet but once we reopen, we are pretty sure we will lose our part timers for sure (why would they give up whatever UI they get plus the extra $600?) and possibly one of our Full timers.

Unfortunately it is what it is. This situation "benefits" some workers while it hurts others.

It benefits people who work full time and make minimum wage (or close to it), and it also benefits part time workers. If you are laid off you can collect UI and just sit out and make what you were making.

It hurts people who fulltime and make a considerable amount more where UI doesn't help much. It also really hurts people who work full time and who were not laid off but had their hours cut, but not cut enough where UI kicks on.

There really isn't a way to make a one size fits all UI system. Some people will benefit, some will not.

No there is away to make it work. just like regular unemployment works the extra $600 should be based off peoples incomes and only given what is needed to cover their normal pay!!

Why does income make a difference? If you give it to people who don't make much they are definitively taking UI. If they make a lot and are furloughed or laid off they are going to be doing whatever is in their power to get back to work. The extra $600 wouldn't factor in to their decision to return to work.

Unless you think the extra $600 should go to the people with HIGHER incomes, and if you think that then that goes against the norm and would never have passed in the first place, would have been blocked by all the blue states.

Why cause if someone was making let’s just say $500 a week (and they were surviving on this) NYS unemployment let’s say giveS them $250 a week and now the federal government is giving them $600 a week they are now getting $850 a week. Why do they need that extra money? They survived before all this with making only $500 a week.

What they should be getting is only an extra $250 a week to cover their salary that’s it.
I don’t know why his was so hard to achieve and why people actually think giving everyone $600 a week blindly is not a waste of money.

While I agree, the $600 is a federal benefit I believe. They probably don't have an easy way from a technology or operations standpoint of altering every state's UI system to start checking claims and issuing additional amounts based on income. You should see what Florida's UI system looks like right now. It is a total shiit show. Google it. They can barely figure out how to issue their normal payments, nevermind trying to modify them.

Besides the extra $600 is only for three months. I still believe that people who think the extra difference is the make or break to take UI vs. keep your job, they should be keeping their job if they had half a brain. There are going to be over 30-40 million people out of work come July 31st. I personally think employers will have the pick of the litter in candidates come August 1st. Does it really make sense to risk a decent job over the opportunity to sit home and make a few extra bucks for three months?

Yes I think people will take advantage especially young people who live home
And don’t really need a job so they won’t care. It’s just a waste and I know unemployment is a shit show I have been trying to talk to someone and I can’t but I’m more worried about all this wasted money and how the country is supposed to survive all this with out going into a rescission of some type. Or how we even can afford to pay for all this. It’s insanity to me!

Re: Unemployment- returning to work?

Congress is completely to blame for this unemployment fiasco. As an employer, I was so upset at first, but now my thought is simply to rehire (I have already had to), and not offer a job back. Once they are on UE they are no longer my responsibility. Good luck to them finding a new job once the dust settles.

I tend to be fatalistic, but I really think a major recession or even the Second Great Depression is coming. A ton of small businesses will go under. Major loss of jobs and income to come. There is no way small businesses have the cash reserve to weather the storm and many lost out on PPP/loan funding because big banks gave so much of the money to larger businesses.

Taxes will most certainly go up given all this "free" money the government is shelling out. BTW, EVERYONE should have been entitled to that despite of income. We ALL pay taxes. Ridiculous.
