Recession/Depression for sure to come
Think of all the people below who have hard hit by this pandemic (not an all inclusive list). I just don't know how we can recover from this if we don't have a plan to reopen in the near future. I am not looking for drama over opening/not opening, but so many people and their staffs have been affected:
Restaurants
Kid programs (dance, music, sports instructors)
Sporting events
Daycares/ preschools
Salons - nail, hair, barbers
Gyms
Wedding industry
Movie industry/theater
Theme parks
Tourism
Cruises
Hotels
Strip clubs
Plastic surgeons and staff
Non-essential surgeons
Doctors - physicians, pediatricians, OBGYN, etc.
Dentists
Preschools
Massage therapists
Physical therapists
Landlords for college campus areas

I agree with a lot on your list. There may be a new or al coming for a lot of these professions. Especially w restaurants. Take out will be the new norm for a treat instead of dining in.
I’m trying to keep a positive head and not think of a full depression from this. If it killed everyone it touched, maybe. But it doesn’t. As deadly as it is, it’s “only” deadly to a small percent. I say only that way because even 1 life lost is too much.

My mental state can't take it.
I really try to think positively throughout this thing. I try to keep hopeful.
It's not healthy to dwell on the negative all the time.

I think it will be bad for a while, but will turn around. I hope that in a year or 2 we will be able to look back on this and say it wasn’t as bad as it could have been...

I disagree with a number of these. As I am planning an event I can tell you these places are booked solid from August on. So yes the staff may need unemployment but it should get them through the summer.
My daughter's dance class is zooming weekly. I am honestly thrilled and very happy to pay for it because it gives a real sense of normalcy these days. Same for scouts.
Will things be the same, no, but things will get better.

I work in live events, mostly corporate events & trade shows, I freelance. So many of us are freaking out...all work is cancelled for the foreseeable future. Dh is in the same industry but smaller meetings...he was laid off but I’m hoping he’ll go back sooner since they do a lot of meetings with 50 & under people. I might actually have to find a new career.

Yes I believe a lot of different industries are going to be affected big time, and may be hard for them to reopen, or if they do, sustain enough business to keep them going.

Yes, exactly. I didn’t want to say it, but you did. I’m waiting for my 4500 stimulus for one person (I’m a freelancer). The 1200 in the US they are offering is a joke. Unemployment is next for me because of this crisis. It isn’t much, but it will pay my health insurance and pension.

How we got in this financial position, is a political argument I have no desire to start. Just stating a fact. We can't do that. Governors are scrambling to begin plans to reopen because this country is going to financially collapse if we don't.
Or, we can rebound. Nobody knows for sure. I am choosing to think positively about the outcome of this. We were able to flatten the curve, and start the descent, less than a month after lockdown began on March 22nd. My guess is by June 1st, we will have entered Phase 1 of the reopening.

However, they have made unemployment very easy now. If you have 60,000 in your bank account, then you will not get it. They have also made your apartment size (most people live in apartments here) not count. They will probably give people about 900 per month. That's not much. I guess I'll find out soon, but I'm glad I have some savings. I'll figure it out somehow. I have been through so many awful things in the last few years that I just think it is just another thing. But at least I know the gov't will help me out.

Lol i was saying the other night I'm tired of takeout because it's always cold by the time I get it home. Yeah you can reheat it but then it starts to overcook if it's chicken or burgers etc.
Like you I'd love a hot meal served to me and cleaned up!

I think the same way! I'm still setting the table and doing the dishes. Plus cleaning the take out containers to put them in recycling.
On a similar note, I'm working from home and I'd actually like to take a Vacation Day. But, it's not worth it because there's nothing to do anyway! In normal times, I would take a day to get things done around the house and go to the mall and stuff like that. But, if I'm just going to stay home anyway, I might as well log in and work!

I understand what you are saying. The 60,000 is only for now. Usually it is about 8,000 depending on how old you are. UE is a total shit show here, but they have two types. UE1 and UE2. UE1 is if you have had a job and have paid into the system. With that one they would not check your bank balance. UE2 is for freelancers and business owners. Then they look at your bank balance and everything else.
I think it’s fair that if you have 60,000 in the bank that you will be fine at the moment. UE should be reserved for those that live paycheck to paycheck for the most part or those that have 6 months in savings and that’s it. I don’t think it is about being responsible with money. People who are living paycheck to paycheck aren’t throwing their money away and being irresponsible. It cost the average single person, at least for me, about 2000 a month to live (rent, food, car, bills). If you have 60,000, then that is more than enough.

I totally agree. At least for me I like to have hope, a light at the end of the tunnel. Negativity is not going to help anyone.

But anyone could be living paycheck to paycheck depending on how they prioritize their money. Technically, I could have bought a house for 3-4 times the price that I did, but we didn’t because we wanted to be responsible. We could go on many more vacations than we do, instead of maxing out our 401k. I could buy myself expensive clothes every month instead of putting money into my kids’ 529 accounts, but we don’t.
As a result, we have savings, but why should I then be penalized for it (which is what would happen)?
