On a completely unrelated note
My DH works for a major financial company in Manhattan. They have a large overseas presence, with firms all over Asia & Europe. Each year, they send employees to these firms with 12 month work visas. DH has always wanted to do it, and have our family lives abroad for a year. Typically the visas are from July- July. So we would go in July 2021. Opportunities for him exist in Milan & Madrid. Both very hard hit by Covid-19, but again, we would not be leaving for another 14 months.
It is a lot to think about, we want to make sure there are good American schools so that our children can continue to receive an American education. We would want them caught up when we return to the US.
The thought of living in Italy or Spain for a year is certainly intriguing, and I look at it as a great life experience for everyone in our family.
Has anyone ever spent considerable amount of time in Europe, with their children? I am interested to hear about American schools, adjusting to the European lifestyle, adjustments, etc.

I don't have any advice, but that sounds absolutely amazing. I've always wanted to spend time in Europe. Not just a vacation, but to actually live for a while to experience the culture. DHs cousins lived in Italy for almost a year straight. They loved it so much that they literally can't get enough of being there. Now they travel back and forth as much as they possibly can.

I would do either of those places in a heartbeat. I have friends who have done it and they LOVED it.

I would definitely go! I've never been to Madrid, but I was in Milan for a few days on vacation. Of the Italian cities I've been to, Milan seems to be the one most similar to New York. I don't know if you get to choose which of the two cities to go to, but if you want something somewhat familiar, then I'd imagine that Milan would be the choice. But, I'm sure either would be fabulous!
And, I don't know how old your kids are, but I'm sure they'll be fine. The experience is worth the year of education, IMO!

That sounds like an amazing opportunity and a great adventure what will make lifetime lasting memories for the whole family. I can't imagine any child NOT loving that experience and cherishing it for rest of their live.
Haven't been to Milan but obsessed with Madrid and would move there in a heartbeat. In general, I would pick Spain over Italy as far as my general impression of both countries and overall system structure. However, I haven't been to Italy in over 15 years so this is more personal impressions rather that an educated opinion. :) I did love both counties but loved Spain juuuust a little more. Also, I believe US dollar stretches much farther in Spain than it does in Italy.
As far as Covid situation, I would imagine things will be under control by the time summer of 2021 rolls around.

I would definitely go. Sounds amazing. My husband goes to Madrid for work often and loves it. As far as schools, I'm sure your husbands company has plans in place to help with schooling and housing.

I’m obviously in the minority but this sounds like an absolute nightmare to me! Depending how much your husband works, being in a foreign country for a year with no friends or family with my kids seems very overwhelming. My kids would miss their school, friends, family. Their “stuff” (as I’m
sure you’d bring very limited amounts from home). I’m not sure they are at the age where they would enjoy the culture and the experience at all.
Before I had kids—absolutely!!

But i'm not very adventurous nor is my child.

like a pp said, i would imagine that your husband's employer would already have connections with schools and housing.
sounds like an amazing adventure and something that would give you memories for a lifetime!
