Completely unrelated to corona
I’ve wanted to get chickens for a few years now. Nothing crazy, just 3 Or 4 chickens. We even have a chicken coop on our property that is a permanent structure and grandfathered in with a permit.
However, in the town of Hempstead, it’s not legal to have chickens. Why, who knows.
I found out today that to get the proper permits will cost $800. THAT IS INSANE. And on top of that, it doesn’t even guarantee that I’ll be able to do it-if my neighbors decided to show up to the eventual hearing, they could theoretically stop the whole process!!
Infuriating that this is what happens when you try to do the right thing.

It's because it's a way for the town to make money. Everything is about money. Red light cameras- not about safety- all about money. Everything in this state is about how the govt can rape you for more and more money.

The towns are terrible. I can understand if it has to do with safety, but a lot of the regulations are really just a money grab. I hate even applying for a permit for anything because when the inspector comes, it's basically an invitation for them to find anything else that might need a permit. So not only do you pay money for a permit, but then your taxes go up too.
I would love to get chickens, they really ruin your yard though. My brother in law has had 4 chickens for about 3 yrs. The whole yard is a dirt and poop pit. They destroyed the sod and he can't get any grass to grow. I wouldn't think that only a few chickens could really do that much damage.

I don't know how fast you want these chickens to move in but TOH is closed.
I'd make nice with your neighbors and get the chickens, permit be damned.

I’m in a different town but my neighbor has chickens. I love her so I would never report her but the amount of rodents that these chickens attract is horrifying.

Maybe that’s why they only allow chickens in Suffolk-? More open spaces/ larger yards?

It’s just so frustrating. I’m actually not looking to get them until next year, because I want to be fully prepared and know what I’m doing before I get them. As for rodents, I think a lot may have to do with how you feed them/if feed is left out/etc.
We’re on a third of an acre, and would have an enclosed coop/run for them, unless were actually out in the yard (which we are a lot) when we would let them roam.
I have good neighbors minus one, and Idk what would happen if they reported us? None of my others would care.
I’m waiting to hear back if I can bundle it with permits for other construction we’re doing next year, bc of all things chickens go through the building department.

That's why you need cats also, lol.

Re: Completely unrelated to corona
I’m In Suffolk on half an acre. I’ve had chickens a little over 3 years now. Anywhere from 3-9 at one time. I don’t have cats. There are occasional cats that come in my yard, but I’ve never seen 1 rodent. Most of the time the chickens are in their coop/run because I have 3 kids running around the yard and I hate when they step in the poop. But they do free range 1-2 times a week in the summer. Dh is crazy with his grass and we’ve never had a problem with them ripping the grass apart. However if they were out everyday for months I can see that happening. Their poop is good fertilizer though
Can your neighbors see in your yard? All of my neighbors didn’t know we had them until we told them. They are pretty quiet most of the time. The only time I’ve heard them get loud is when all the nesting boxes are taken at the same time, which doesn’t happen often. Also, you will have to get pullets (older chicks) in order to get only 3-4. NYS law requires baby chicks to be sold in sets of at least 6.
