The problem here is that people are losing their jobs left and right and those who ARE able to work, in many cases cannot because they have no one to care for their children. I am drowning like nobody's business but I'm not going to go hungry. Other people are. People who make lower wages are much more likely to HAVE to go to work, in jobs that are often unsafe (that's a whole other issue). What do they do with their kids? I am honestly asking. I think it's all well and good to say the schools are unsafe, etc but the reality is, for many kids, they are the safer option. School IS the safer option when the alternative is being left alone, or with abusive caregivers or starving because their parents can't work to put food on the table or homeless because they can't afford rent.

I don't understand how people don't see that. I just can't fathom it.

What do people do with their kids in the summer? Where do they go then?

I will have to say I always wonder this too when they say school has to be open so they can work. Does everyone really have a job that goes around the school schedule. where they work 9-3:30 are off all days kids are plus summer? I am doubting everyone is a teacher.

PS: I want school to be open i just never understood this argument

So will camps be open this year? How are daycare going to handle kids now? Will they limit the number in each class?

I didn’t take it that way. I feel like when people say that they aren’t paying for any daycare. Lol I guess a stupid assumption.
I wsend my kids to after care and camp. Before they were in school I paid for full time daycare. So my expectation would be just to pay for child care now assuming he is going to be opening daycares and camps. Because if he doesn’t then that means he has no intention opening any businesses!! Which I am prepping myself also for!! Chat Icon

NYC runs a variety of free or low cost summer programs for children. I assume that's where they go.

For those with the means, kids go to camp.

Before/after care for schools days.

It's also fairly easy to find vacation camps for breaks and of course regular camp in summer.

City schools have programs to cover vacations for those who need them.

Aftercare, then for summer kiddie academy has a “campventures” program for kids up to age 12. They take them on trips and everything. It’s incredible. And they are open 7:30-5:30. Cheaper than camp and better for those with real working hours. Many of the “camps” I see advertised are half days. Anyway I don’t expect things to be the same this summer...

Holy cow the flat out panic on this post. I have been around much lately but this is crazy. So what N.Y. closed schools. Do people realize what happened in our area. Count yourselves lucky if you didn’t have anyone die. I had multiple. So if I have to have my son stay home so be it.

And believe me I’m still going to stores, riding my bike and running but sending the 1000+ kids and staff back into my sons elementary school would be insane.

The fact is that no hero doctor or essential worker on the front lines should be exposed to one germ from one person who demands rights without responsibilities. The ad hominem attacks on posters show people's inabilities to deal with reality without attacking people who didn't choose to live through this and may be far less comfortable than they are. It's not about any of us, and anyone who attacks others can't see past their own interests. When people start with the whole "You're only saying that because YOU..." it reveals that their own opinions are all about THEIR own situations and no one else's.

If I were a doctor, I would be furious. Because people fatigued from doing their part to contain this but everyone demands world class healthcare when they and their family gets sick.

None of us likes this. But many of us resent the misdirected vitriol.

I am guessing that either you or a close loved one is a health care worker. My best friend of 32 years is a physician at a LI hospital. But even she is capable of empathy for people who are struggling with the quarantine, and even she, a front line worker, acknowledges that isolation is painful and that there are unintended consequences to the extended stay at home orders that are real. It doesn’t lessen her resolve, or change her mind about what she knows is best, but it does make her a lot more empathetic to people’s struggles. For some reason, you are determined to trivialize others’ experiences. You don’t care about anyone else’s family, but expect us all to care about yours.

The other day, I was "accused" of being a teacher. Nope. No front line heros in my house or family.

I love the way people keep telling me what I "must" be. Because it's revealing more about them than me.

It's kind of laughable. If you actually read my post quoted above...Case in point.

Re: Schools Closed in NY

So everyone wants to move because they closed the schools? They closed many of the schools in most of the southern states.
I am NOT a fan of Cuomo, but I think he made the right decision. He is not fortune teller, no on can predict how long this will linger on for. We can only go week by week. Everyone seems to want a definite answer, which you are not going to get.

I'm ready to cry. This is awful news and totally unfair for the kids. I wish I did not live in this God-awful state. I hate NY!!

I am crying and I know he won't open them in the fall either. I am looking for rental properties in a southern state.

NC closed schools beginning March 16 and they are closed for the rest of the school year

44 states have either closed or recommended that school districts close for the remainder of the school year. Where exactly are people thinking they are going to go? I no longer live in NY but as the state that is the covid epicenter in the country, I'd think people would agree that they should stay closed. Where I live, the sentiment was that even if school reopened this academic year, the majority wouldn't send their kids. I am glad our schools closed. And nothing is certain regarding schools reopening for the next academic year in many states, it's not just NY.

Real estate in this God forsaken area of the country are tied to the school districts. No schools, no demand for houses. Who's going to buy a house with a $10K or $15K or $25K tax price tag for a couple of worksheets and some youtube videos with broken links? We've ALWAYS been FUKED, now it's just without lube.

You're basically paying a school tuition for nobody to attend.

For name recognition for starters. Harvard University is preparing to do online classes in the fall. Many other big universities are doing the same. Do you think they are going to see a significant decline in enrollment because a school might be online only for a few months? Chat Icon

And the real estate industry in Long Island is not totally tied to the districts. Proximity to NYC jobs with an area surrounded by water on three sides is the primary reason for the prices. Schools may be a close second, but even houses in the "bad" or "average" districts still sell.

I hope so.

Eta: By tuition I meant the amount paid for taxes for k-12.

My school taxes are ridiculous and my kid hasn't even been in the SD yet (starts in Sept.)

It is what it is. But I don't think the RE market is going to collapse from this.

The people I do feel bad for are the people sending their kids to expensive colleges and paying for dorms that they aren't using. 50-60k a year for housing. Ouch.

I really hope you're right! I fear another 2008 on the horizon the longer this goes on.

Yes! You're right about people paying for unused college dorms. I feel horrible for everybody in hardship situations right now. There has to be a better solution.

Why home prices are rising during the pandemic

Article just posted by the WSJ which basically backs up what I was saying last week. No real issues with home prices mainly for two reasons.

#1 sellers are holding at their prices. Why take a bath on your price if you don't need to. I am really seeing this in my southeast Florida market as home are still selling here with no issue and market prices. I would imagine Long Island will be similar here.

#2 and more importantly for Long Island, inventory is at an ALL TIME LOW. Sellers aren't selling and the people that need or want to buy have nothing to choose from, again driving prices up!

This is a non issue IMO. Things will start opening back up soon. Interest rates are at record lows. Nothing to see here, move along. Chat Icon

Nobody here is saying that schools should reopen now for this current year.

The fear is September.
