Bad sunburn help
I’m waiting for a call back from my son’s pediatrician but what can I put on his face that has bad sunburn? He’s in middle school and has literally never had sunburn before! It’s peeling and a little blistery. His poor cheeks look so bad. I’m so upset and worried about scarring. Any advice is appreciated.

Silvadene- I think it’s Rx only but I believe there are otc options now- silver burn cream/gel. Poor kid. I’ve been there myself. Hope he gets some relief!

Re: Bad sunburn help
Thanks everyone! Will look into these. It actually doesn’t hurt him anymore. I’ve been using aquaphor on it. A lot of it has peeled but still has a blister and the lighter skin is showing now. So scared he will scar or his face coloring will be all crazy. Big lesson learned. I feel so terrible. I always, always force him to wear sunscreen and the one time I didn’t this happens.

He will likely not scar or have any permanent discoloration. Kids have so much collagen that their skin is like rubber and they heal fast. I had some bad sunburns as a kid and it didn't leave any lasting marks

Bad sunburn help
I agree about it not scarring. I had a few bad sunburns as a kid, one which I remember hard chunks of skin coming off my face and looking god awful. I had no remaining scars.

ITA. I had a SEVERE sunburn when I was 15. Horrible! Blistering, oozing- I seriously looked like Freddy Krueger and my parents even let me miss a week of 9th grade bc of it. So painful and hideous!!! But the pink skin underneath was just that- just new skin and it “grew” in fine and no scarring at all. So glad to hear it’s not painful for him- I remember that pain too well!

Bad sunburn help
Aloe with lidocaine, keep it in fridge. I have had a couple of bad sunburns in my life, most recently last month, even though I am old enough to know better! I doubt he will have scarring.

Bad sunburn help
I agree with the aloe suggestion. If u happen to have an aloe plant, perfect! Just cut a leave, peel the skin as thinly as possible and use the aloe straight from it. It’ll feel so cooling to the skin, providing great relief, also it has amazing healing properties for the skin. I’ve also seen Whole Foods carrying big aloe leaves.

When I was in college, I sat my Irish a$$ out on the quad on a sunny day in March in Maryland, of all places, fell asleep and woke up with 2nd degree burns on my face and blisters the size of quarters. It was horrifying but I had absolutely no scars at all from it!! Good luck to you and your son!
