BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

I was out yesterday and got a REALLY bad sunburn. I was up all night with it because it is so painful. As you can see from my avatar I'm really pale so even though I was only out for like an hour or so-- it's VERY bad.

It looks really scary and I keep freaking my co-workers out. Can anyone recommend any remedies for sunburns? I'm looking to get it to peel and fade as quickly as possible-- and for the pain to go away. I keep getting the chills and then the sweats.

My boss says he swears they are third degree burns and I'm as red as a lobster. Should I go to the Doctor (either the dermo or my PC)??

I can’t believe how bad this is—I really didn’t think, because it’s only Spring, to put on sunscreen yesterday. Chat Icon

Re: BAD Sun Burn-- Remedies??

oh noooooooo

That's terrible!!!
I know everyone calls me Nervous Nikki, but I wear sunscreen year round because I burn so easily, too Chat Icon

I would just keep moisturizing - vitamin E works wonders - and you can take some tylenol or advil, too.

Re: BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

Go to your doc, promary care. If they are that severe, i don't know what they can do.

I know I burn so I always wear SPF45. And when I do burn, I use Aloe. That works the best.

You should probably go to the derm becuase of the chills.

You can use a cream like aquaphor that is esp for burns

Re: BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

I feel ya, I got a nice burn this weekend too and so unexpectadly...

Just aloe. That's my only remedy. Buy a big bottle of the Banana Boat aloe (it's a yellow-ish/cream color) and stick it in the fridge and as soon as you get home, strip down and lube up... wear very loose clothing when you can.

As far as making it peel and fade, I don't think there's really anything you can do. But if you feel like you need to go to the Dr. go... you can never be too safe.

I have had many 2nd degree sunburns in my life... If it is that bad and I have cuts, they give me Silvadene cream for the cuts and I take Prednisone, but that's only if I can't breathe b/c the sunburn is so bad... I would load up on the aloe and lanacane for now for you!

Re: BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

Thank you all!

For those that wear sunscreen a lot and especially year-round... Do you use a cream WITH an SPF in it or actual Sunscreen? I can barely stand wearing sunscreen in the Summer let alone wearing it all year-round. Chat Icon

Any recommendations for a cream with SPF in it or for a good sunscreen that doesn't feel like you are an oily, disgusting mess? Chat Icon

Re: BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

I have done this more times that I can count!
I use the green aloe gel. It is soothing, and helps the healing.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER! The sunburn dries you right up and drinking lots of water will help.
Also wear loose clothing and do NOT put dressings on any of it. When you get home, put cold washcloths on your legs and arms to cool you off.

Yes, I don't wear it in the winter, but once the t-shirts come out and skin is exposed I start to wear it all the time - I use Neutrogenia products, they make ones that are more like a lotion and are not yukky like most sunblocks..

If I do get sunburn -
drink lots of water, use aloe, and sleep!
Do you have blisters? Unless your skin is blistering, I wouldn't bother seeing a dr.

Re: BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

Tsk, tsk! Sunscreen everyday--regardless!!!

Take Tylenol and apply some aloe--the kind with little alcohol in it (regular is drying) and get some Murad SPF 15 Correcting moisture. It's green (doesn't go on green) and will soothe the red.

Re: BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

what i end up doing one time was sitting in a cold cold bath.

Another thing that helps is cold tea. I don't know why, but i made fresh tea (advice from a friend), let it cool and put a hand towels in it, rung it out and put it on my skin. It seemed to help believe it or not. Chat Icon

Re: BAD Sunburn-- Remedies??

SOLARCAINE! I have had HORRIBLE burns, and Solarcaine is the only thing that helps. It numbs and helps the burn heal more quickly. Only thing my dermatologist recommends.

nope, plain. it's at most supermarkets! get the FULL fat kind. It's the milk/dairy that soothes.

nope.....no vanilla.....just plain. It definitely exists. Usually comes in a larger container although I have seen it in the individual cups by dannon. it's not so easy to find though. Hope you feel better soon!!Chat Icon

No - there is Plain yogurt. Get that, not vanilla. Many companies have plain. I'm pretty sure that Columbo and Stony Field farms have it.

No , they are 2 different things--see:

Dannon makes a full fat one, but it is harder to find than low fat or fat free.

As for sunscreen I only recently found body lotions that had SPF in them. I have used face lotion with SPF for a while, but body lotion seems to be newer.

Chat Icon I was the queen of sunburn when I was younger. Some of the treatments I used were Calamine lotion, pure aloe (the green gel if you can get it) and natural yogurt. Also, taking a lukewarm bath in tea will take the sting out of the burn.

Any lotion or cream with lidocaine will help the pain, you can ask the pharmacist at a drug store for what they carry.
