Is cooking meat on the BBQ considered making dinner?
Please settle a debate, lol!
Obviously, like a lot of people, we are using the bbq more than the oven.
DH thinks that when he puts meat on the grill, he has made dinner.
So if we bbq'd 3 nights in a row, he thinks dinner 3 nights in a row and night 4 he should be off.
However, I'm the one who marinated the meat, made the side dishes, cleaned up, etc.
Why do guys think standing by the grill and flipping meat is cooking??? I mean, yes, it is. But...when I'm cooking meat on the stove or in the oven, I'm also making 3 other things, cleaning up, and setting the table.
Is it me?

That's the equivalent of having a pot-luck dinner, and if you just made a ham and declared "I made this feast for everyone."
"Making Dinner" is a lot more than grilling meat.

Re: Is cooking meat on the BBQ considered making dinner?
OMG! I just had this same "discussion" with my DH this morning!
Throwing a piece of meat on the grill is not "making dinner." This is was him BBQ-ing last night:
Where's the burgers? Where are the buns? What sides are you making? Are they almost done? Can you bring me out the spatula? I'm ready for the cheese. How much longer for the sides? Where's the plate? Do we have ketchup? What about pickles? Can you turn off the gas at the tank for me while I wash my hands?
I made a salad, I set the table, I made corn on the cob, put everything away, loaded the dishwasher, cleaned the pots and pans, and swept the kitchen floor. Not to mention that I was the one who went food shopping to get the dinner!
Then right before we go to bed: did you cover the BBQ?
Then this morning, we were talking about dinner last night and he said "I cooked last night!!" WTF?????
So NO it is NOT "making dinner" - not even close.

Re: Is cooking meat on the BBQ considered making dinner?
it is not just you!!
when i make dinner, i clean as i go. i hate it when someone else cooks and leaves the kitchen a disaster.
making dinner is much more than just putting fire to raw food.
you're right and your husband is wrong

That’s why I usually just do it all unless hubby is doing the entire dinner. It is just easier sometimes.

Re: Is cooking meat on the BBQ considered making dinner?
I just showed this whole thread to my husband. He read the first part and said “why isn’t it”. Had to tell him to read the whole thing.
They don’t get it
He’s going to say “I don’t eat the salad so I don’t need it...” etc
And he insists it’s making dinner. Then said “it’s part of making dinner”
I’ll do that part next time.

Re: Is cooking meat on the BBQ considered making dinner?
It seems like you both cooked dinner. Since he gets a night off for his one contribution. By his logic you should add up all your contributions to the dinner and that’s how many nights you will get off. To me that’s very fair.

No he did not cook dinner. I would just ask him in the morning if he's making dinner and then sit back and let him figure out what it actually means to cook dinner.

You are totally right.
My husband maybe made dinner 3 times since the pandemic started.
Last night was one of them - he heated up leftovers from a dinner I made earlier in the week..... does that count?
but seriously

I’d say he helped, but can’t take total credit for making dinner.

It seems like a joint effort.
It’s like my DH saying he cleaned the whole house when he just vacuumed and cleaned the floors but leaves crap everywhere.

The best is when he cooks or preps ONE thing and I do the rest (and ALL the clean up) and he goes to me: "Thanks for helping".WTF????? Lol. I have to laugh, because if not, I'd be kicking his a$$. And I just don't have the strength.

Same in my house. Actually, I make all of our vegetables for the week on the weekend- because even with working from home, we are still working 10/12 hour days. FH has more flexibility with his work so he will season, grill, heat up a vegetable & set the table. (unless I am on a call at dinner time, then he brings my dinner into my office)
If we plan to have a salad with dinner, I make it anytime during the day when I have a few free minutes.
