What type of mask do you prefer?

A year ago, I never would have thought to talk about masks, and especially not "favorite masks"....

Since masks seem like they are going to be around for a while, people are starting to get creative with them. Brides have coordinating bridal masks. Companies are making masks from the same material as men's ties.
There are "trikinis" that use the same material for the mask as the bikini.
There's the generic blue paper masks.
Homemade fabric masks.
N95 masks.
Gators that wrap around your head and cover more of your head and neck.

Because of my beard, I like the gator style. DW got a couple of cool designs. I wear one with lightning bolts or a flame one for when I weld with other people. I have a grey one that matches my beard Chat Icon

I have a box of the generic "blue" masks (but in pink) which I think are pretty good.

I have some fabric ones (cotton type material) that are also easy to breath in . But I have one that is more of a "stretchy, polyester-type" material that I don't like at all - I find that the fabric is too "flimsy" so when I talk, the fabric gets sucked into my mouth. Not good at all.

As for style - depends on what I'm doing. If I am going somewhere "nice" I might try to coordinate one of my fabric masks with what I am wearing. But for the most part, I grab whatever is closest - and the pink paper ones are my usual "go to."

i usually wear blue disposable or the few fabric ones my employer has given us.

i bought my son three gaiters made from "cooling" fabric that you wet. he works outdoors. he can keep it around his neck to stay cool and then just put it over his mouth and nose when he comes into the building. he seems to like them because he wears them every day at work.

I just want to find something that's "safer". I've been wearing one that's cloth, but made from a thicker cloth and pleated so it feels like it's "safer". But my university just gave us 3 that are thinner - which makes me nervous. However, the university is tied to a well known research and medical center so I can't imagine they would give us something that isn't safe.

A friend of mine made one that ties behind the head and I don't like using it. It's awkward and has too much material hanging down. The one I use mostly has ear loops.

I read that the ones with the side vent (circle vent) actually aren't safe to use b/c it allows particles to escape from the vent.

Here's a survey that Duke University did to see which ones let through more particles.

I've only tried a N95 ( because I had one) and the surgical kind. I prefer the surgical kind. I kind of want to get a "formal" one for if/when I go out somewhere where Ive put thought into my outfit, but I am afraid that I won't like the material. I'm picky with my shorts, and this is on my face.

I like the plain blue disposable ones. They’re not hot and they don’t fog up my glasses!

If I'm going to a store, I will wear a fabric one that either my friend made or I made.

If I'm going to a doctor, I'll wear a paper one so I can toss it.

I haven't decided about work yet but most likely fabric because I can't afford to buy a new box every few weeks at $50 each!

Re: What type of mask do you prefer?

I use the cotton ones from Old Navy, but my 1st grader is constantly sucking on it. So we got amazon ones made from ice silk, polyviscose fiber mask I think? It's super light weight and kind of cones a bit at the face so it's not on your nose or lips. Not sure of it's efficacy though. But it is a lot more comfortable than any other mask I've worn.

I make masks so I literally have a ton of 2-ply cotton masks. My MIL said she read something about not being able to blow out a match when wearing a mask. So I’ve tested them that way and I haven’t been able to blow out a match in any of the ones I made. I do have a box of paper masks that I’ll use every once in a while but those are huge on me so I prefer the masks I make.

Interesting because I thought the black ones I got were not as effective, but when blew out a flame with the Old Navy ones, I was surprised. I was unable to blow it out using the black ones from amazon, or another mask I have with a pocket insert.
