Online school OOS

I'm wondering about something. If someone was living in NYC and they decided to move out to another state, but they'll keep their kids enrolled in the NYC public school system since they can do it virtually... how does it work? I'm confused. Is that right?

You cannot enroll your child in the NYC public school system, whether in person or remote, if you do not live in NYC.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I know someone on that situation. They moved OOS and she just told me her kids will keep joining virtually their NYC school they were attending last spring... and I'm afraid they won't be the only case.

They probably did not notify the school in that case, so the school is unaware they have moved.

I could see this happening in many districts -- even with in-person school. These days almost all correspondence is via email anyway. I could see someone moving and just not telling anyone. Then, they just drive their kid to school instead of taking the bus. Obviously, they could get caught. But, let's say you moved in May and just want your kids to finish out the school year, you could easily do it, IMO.

Very easy to do especially if they are going fully remote unless you get ratted out.

That is the key. People are bigger rats than ya think! I find that people like to stir things up, especially when it comes to tax dollars.
If anyone knows you left, or saw a moving truck just consider yourself found out.
But I agree with PP if it was a matter of weeks at the end of the school year id finish it out too.

People are such busy bodies that I can see them calling the school to report it. Honestly who cares. Schooling is so abnormal right now and remote learning isn't even a great And stellar education option in most instances right now.

Re: Online school OOS

Someone I know is doing this. They are moving a week before school is supposed to start, both districts are virtual and rather rush to enroll in the new one, they will stay with their old one. Yes it is technically wrong to do but in the current climate if it helps a family and kids cope with what is going on, who cares.

I can see this happening. But in my district, they mail you paperwork about a week before school starts. If it gets returned to the school ( I believe that school mail cannot be forwarded) the districts would more than likely find out.

This happened to a coworker of mine with her daughters school district on Long Island. Moved out of district, she never told the school because she didn’t want to pull her daughter. School mail was returned, and then she had a week to get her daughter enrolled in the new school once the school found out. Not worth it.

It isn't right but, it's probably harder now that learning is virtual - I know many people in my town did their remote learning in the spring from out of state (they didn't fully relocate, just went away for a bit)

It isn't uncommon though for people to lie about where they live to get into a better district though - someone told me that their neighbor was renting their address (different district) but got caught and faced a hefty fine.

Long Island is far more strict with this than NYC.

I moved quite a few times when my son was in elementary school and we never had an issue. In fact, when he went to middle school, I had to quickly change my address to where we live now so that he could go to his zoned school and not what they THOUGHT was his zoned school

NYC takes an unofficial (because I'm sure someone would say this isn't true) position of 'once you're in, you're in'

She will need to maintain a NYC address to do this. She can't update her address to another state.
