Stupid question on work out wear

What are the thumb holes for?
I've seen them on the jackets and even on shirts.
I find them uncomfortable and I don't use them but what is the real purpose of them?

Stupid question on work out wear

I love the thumb holes!!! I don't know really why but I think it's to make sure the sleeves don't ride up. Kind of like stirrup pants for your arms.

Stupid question on work out wear

I use them all the time. Perfect for a long run when you start out cold but don’t want gloves. I also have them in all my snowboard gear.

Yes, I was going to say they keep my hands warm. I don't run but I use them all the time.

Re: Stupid question on work out wear

Ah OK. I got a jacket that has them and it's not very cold out yet so I didn't even think of the warm hands thing.
I do find it uncomfortable though...like it's digging into rhe fleshy part between my thumb and first finger. Kind of like when you wear flip flops for the first time in a while and it rubs you between your toes until you toughen that area up!

I like the thumb holes since my hands get really cold after I lost weight. Two problems is if you put on real gloves, it tends to pull on it in uncomfortable ways - and now, hand sanitizer! thumb on, thumb off. thumb on, thumb off. Chat Icon

Does it keep your hands that warm though? I feel like in the winter what's freezing on me is always my fingers.

Re: Stupid question on work out wear

I use the thumb holes when I'm running outside. It just keeps the sleeves all the way down and helps keep heat in the lower arm/wrist/hand area.

I usually see it in base layer stuff. So I suppose it also helps keep that layer in place better and not twisting around or riding up.

But yea, it's not going to help your fingers.

Yes because when running in the winter you have to dress for not the temp outside but your warmed up temp. So you are freezing when you start and sweating when you are done.

Stupid question on work out wear

i LOVE thumb holes.

i have long-sleeve t-shirts that have them.
i wear them and/or fingerless gloves at work. they let me stay warmer and give me ease to type.

i'm one of those women who is ALWAYS cold. i wear sweaters in the summer.

i discovered them when i started running, and i've never looked back.

ps. just yesterday, i was looking at gear to buy the office staff and i almost bought jackets with thumb holes. the only reason i didn't was because the company only offered women's jackets and nothing for the men folk.

Yes, it does. I’ve used them for Spartan races and it helps. The thin shirt ones, probably not as much. But they are good for layering. I’ve worn those with a cold gear vest or jackets.

But I also wear those fingerless gloves or mittens where the top comes off in the winter. I find they keep my hands warms as well.

You know come to think of it, a few years ago I found these arm warmer things on Groupon or something and they are fingerless but they absolutely keep my hands warm on even the coldest days so I see your point.
Kind of like these.

Re: Stupid question on work out wear

I love thumb holes! I never really think of my wrists as being cold, but i have shorter arms & would always pull my sweatshirt sleeves down past my wrists. I don't even run I wear a sweatshirt like that on the couch.

I think it has to do with the veins there- keeping them warms warms your hands in general.

I can see it being uncomfortable if it didn't fit right though-- if you arms are longer or your hands are bigger, the hole may not be in the right spot for you & may pull.

ETA- l love the model's jazz hands.
