A positive thread- doing things for others recently

I thought we could have an uplifting thread with things people have done for others. It can be as simple as picking up something that someone else dropped.

I'm involved in creating a brand-new Special Needs Boy Scout Troop in the area. We had our first campout this past weekend. Only 4 boys so far, but they had a great time helping to set up their tents, make a campfire, cook food, hike, play team/trust games, etc.
I don't have any kids in this Troop, but I camped with them the whole weekend to get them started in the right direction, and help the parents with learning how to camp and Scout.
When the kids are outside of the rigid structure of school, they open up and are able to relax and be themselves a lot more.

Great idea!

I recently saw an elderly woman outside on a hot, humid day, and it looked like it was about to rain. She appeared a bit exasperated, and I went up to her. We started talking, and she was on her way to her church. She was walking, and she still had quite a way to go. So I drove her.

When she got out of the car, she said, "You have helped me, and God will help you." Chat Icon

As soon as I pulled away from the church, it started to rain.

Love this.
I saw a kid crying from anxiety at a drop-off event, and I modeled some breathing techniques and started introducing them to other kids to help them calm down. I wasn't working there, I didn't know anyone else, I dropped my kid off and we noticed what they were going through, so we just helped them catch their breath long enough to calm down and realize they were ok.
Sometimes all we need to know is that we're not alone.

I try to make sure I’m around to give the mailman and deliver drivers and landscapers cold water or Gatorade or ice pops on hot days. The landscapers are not mine lol but I can’t imagine how hot they are out there some days.

That's so nice. Chat Icon Especially based on the timing of the rain, I'm sure she told the story to a lot of people at church.

Nothing big, but I just try to make it a point to say "Thank you. You were really helpful" when people (workers) have helped me. It is such a little thing on my part, but it may just help their day in a small way.

One day I called a notoriously annoying company to question the recent increases on my bill which were very vague. The customer service rep patiently answered all my questions. I still hate those charges and the way the company is sneaky about it. But I told her "Thank you. You were really helpful" She stammered and said "Oh thank you. No one ever said that before" I really felt bad for her and imagined having to sit and listen to irate customers day in and out..

That's really cool. It literally takes about 2 seconds of your time, and almost no work, but it can make a huge difference in someone's day. If everyone could do something like this every day, the world would be a much different place.

Re: A positive thread- doing things for others recently

I have a hard time tooting my own horn so I'll balance mine out with someone else's.

When I found out my lump wasn't cancerous I bought a bunch of gift cards and left them with drive throughs to cover peoples' orders.

Also something I will never forget: I was at a train station in Copenhagen headed to the airport for a flight. There was no booth to be found so I was at a kiosk to get my ticket. None of my cards were working and it didn't take cash. I had plenty of kroner and plenty of different credit cards that had worked all week, so I didn't expect trouble. I had no idea what I was going to do and was starting to panic when I see someone shove their card in the slot and pay for my ticket. I turned around to see this tall gorgeous guy smiling at me. He pulled his card out, smiled, nodded, and walked away. I was so stunned it was all I could do to say thank you. Tall, hot Nordic man, wherever you are, I wish you a lifetime of happiness.

About 15 years ago, there was a brief transit strike. It really bugged me because these people were leaving all of NYC in the lurch! That morning, I got up early and went looking for people who may need a ride to work. I ended up dropping a teacher off at her school and a couple of hospital workers to their job too. I felt I needed to do my small part.
