My son is in 7th grade this year (we're in NC). Thankfully, the school district has mandated that all kids wear masks all the time, except during meals (which are outside). Additionally - all faculty and staff have to be vaccinated and masked. I rarely hear about COVID cases in my son's school - so that helps with my anxiety.
The biggest plus is that my son didn't do well academically last year b/c he was too busy goofing off and watching Youtube during school. So far this year, he has all As. :)
We’re on LI but outside to eat lunch as well, as long as weather permits. The schools have picnic tables under tents or kids can bring a towel to sit on the grass if they prefer.
I actually really like this and hope it stays. Fresh air is always good.
Otherwise most stuff is back to normal. Our meet the teacher is virtual though, and I know some people don’t like that but I’m ok with it. I can hear the same spiel from the comfort of my own home!

We are in NYC schools too.. (just outside of Nassau) My daughter was 100% remote last year, so this is her first time back in school in a 1 1/2 years- she started middle school this year. She's liking it so far. They really aren't allowed to take off their masks, she said lunch is at single desks, 3 feet apart, no one facing each other. But they only have about 15 mins to eat and then they go outside, where they take off their masks. Wonder what will happen when it's bad weather? No lockers ( but they can leave stuff in their homeroom) and no lockers/changing for gym...I guess because they are too much on top of each other. I did see they announced they will be testing a random sample weekly now (instead of bi-weekly), BUT they won't have to quarantine as long as the guidelines (spacing/masks) are followed, so that's good. They are already signed up on google classroom....and all assignments are posted & turned in there...so they are ready for a seamless transition if needed. I haven't heard that there will be no clubs/activities if not vaccinated (my DD is 11, so she is not)
I heard vaccine is coming up next for 5 to 11. I think it's NYC schools not allowing the unvaccinated to join the clubs/activities which is still a shame. People can still play chess, play instruments, or attend other arts and crafts with mask on, at least should keep kids occupied instead of sending them home where they will just play on their computers. Luckily our kids are active, they want to go to park but still I would rather have them do that and have some brain activities. I am a big supporter of Chess but I don't think NYC schools pay much attention to it.

It’s going ok- clubs and sports are back. Just the cafeteria overflow is the auditorium and it’s been difficult eating off your lap. Hope they find a solution there. Also, no lockers so the kids are carrying a lot this year including their sports equipment all day. My son is complaining of neck pain from it now, neighboring districts are allowing lockers. Not sure the hold up.
In person is leaps and bounds better than virtual

Same issue here, no lockers and super heavy bags, I would expect them to at least reduce the number of materials they have to carry, our DS already has neck and back issues, this is not going to help. I wonder if any exceptions can be made, I really don't understand why lockers can't be used, you get a large door serving as a divider and DS is telling me it's like everyone is on top of each other in stairs anyway, him being 6th grade, he says 8th graders almost stampede over smaller kids.

Just went to open school night last night and what I found interesting was the gym teacher said if they change for gym they ask they keep their masks on in the locker room so that they don't have to quarantine if they are exposed to a covid case.
He said- masked do not have to quarantine.
I wonder if that is holding true for the whole school.
It was odd that the gym teacher brought it up in regards to the gym locker room.
And they have locker use- thank God. And yes, they are one on top of the next. my DD's locker is literally UNDER the person's on top of her. She has to squat under him to get to it.

They are I’m guessing would not be in contact for more than 10-15 minutes in the locker room. So if they are masked and not in extended contact there is no quarantining. I’m guessing classrooms there are closer for longer periods of time.

But like alli3131 said - that's less than 10 minutes so it doesn't require quarantine (I had to look that rule up after someone drove my kid home from baseball in the spring and tested positive the next day...)
