Middle school and not any fancy phone either. All they need is calls and texts feature. If they want a fancy phone then have them save up their own money (allowance). Don't need to keep up with Joneses as they say.
It boggles my mind that we are handing 7 year olds devices that cos $1000 plus to play around on. My 12 year old isn't even responsible enough to not break or lose it.
Facts!! No way am i giving a child the newest Iphone/apple watch model that some sucker parents get. You get the cheapest working phone that does the job.
I always thought that too but then when you go to buy a phone the older models and up being more expensive because they give incentives and rebates with the newer models. If I want the newer model I will make my kid take my phone and I upgrade but sometimes it's not worth the hassle.
Yes, DH gave DD his old iPhone because he was getting the newer model. I don't think it's so bad at middle school age but people are talking about Kindergarten age and second graders having phones.... and that to me is WAY too young to have a super expensive device IMO
Yes, this. I have every intention of getting my DD a phone before she gets to middle school. But right now, she just turned 7. She doesn’t go anywhere alone. She can’t call a friend and plan her own play date. I guess she could text or FaceTime (I let her do this sometimes on my phone with my friends’ kids) but that’s not really how I want her spending every evening or weekend at this age.
Yes! Trust me you do NOT want her spending every evening and weekend on the devices at this age. That will happen for sure when they hit the middle school age and get a phone. It's terrible Hold that off as long as possible. Let her play with toys etc at this age. The hold these devices have on them once they get full access is horrible
Funny we are talking about this and I said that every kid probably DOES have a phone and then that story from the middle school came up last night and the woman said her 12 year old doesn't have a phone. I am a little shocked that a 12 year old doesn't have a phone but then with that story something seems off anyway.
What story is that?
You missed all of that?
Apparently. I have no idea what you are talking about
I just messaged you. Check your emails as it seems parents got an email yesterday about it.
I got that email yes. But i didn't hear anything about what it has to do with a cell phone
Is this the Penis post and the mom who has a child who is 12 that doesn't have a cell phone? I don't find anything off with that post at all, and the teacher was fired, so the school didn't think it was off either.
I am only going to say that there are "kids" who are close to 30 that I was told did this in this same class when they were that age. It was a sub so thinking it was something in the curriculum.
I am just glad my kids are out of school and don't have to deal with parents anymore as they got worse and worse through the years, IME.
Eh, the whole lesson seemed inappropriate. My SO is a male teacher, and even agreed. I can't imagine asking the kids to chant Penis softly, then get louder and louder, and a child coming to me telling me they are uncomfortable, and me dismissing it. Shrug. I dunno. But clearly the school found it to be wrong as well, since the teacher in question was in fact fired. Not reassigned to another leave replacement class. Not suspended. Flat out fired.
One side to the story, remember that.

It was an science anatomy class. Seems like this "game" has been going on for years and years and years.

It seems nothing new if you google it.

Well if that is the case that whole department should be fired. You don't make up a game having kids scream Penis. If they were doing that outside of the class, I'm sure they would be written up. People need to have some common sense.

This is not just this ONE school. I just posted something random that I googled. It is nothing new it sounds like and again I was told they have done this in schools for many years.
I have never been in a class that does this but again, the sub did not just make this up.

What you posted was a teacher yelling the word once to get the awkwardness out of the way. That is totally different than having a game where students are screaming the words back and forth.

A 12 year old girl told the teacher she was uncomfortable and he insisted she participate anyway. I think that is what instigated the complaint. The whole thing just felt gross, and since he was fired I assume the school agreed.

There is no other side. Even if the child did not say they were uncomfortable during class, the game is in poor taste. You can teach anatomy without making jokes and games about it. Maybe they should all start singing that song Reproduction from Grease 2 or maybe just have the class strip so they can see the body parts in person. People need to use their common sense.
If this was a "game" they did all the time, then I do not think the sub should have been fired, someone in admin should have been, but if it was something that was added in by the sub with no approval then they are at fault.

My daughter's science class has 2 teachers- I am not sure if they all have co-teachers in 7th grade science, but if there was another teacher in the room maybe they corroborated the student's side. I would think they would need more than just the word of one student to fire someone - and they fired him super fast too

I would hope so and agree if the child spoke up then allow her to leave if she felt uncomfortable. I wonder what other kids are saying too since they were in the class and witnessed it.

I agree totally that if girl said something he could have excused her from the class. We seem to only be hearing it from one mother. I have heard from a teacher and someone else involved in the school that have a different story and thinks it was blown up.

We did end of 5th grade (middle school). That was for a full phone the she was able to carry around with her. When she was younger, she did have an Ipad that had Facetime on it to talk to her friends but that was only used in the house.
I am curious how did you set up Facetime on the ipad where the other kids can call the ipad directly? Did the ipad have it's own line of service (data only) and were they calling the phone number associated with it? Or did the ipad have it's own icloud account and they were calling the icloud? Or did the ipad share one of your icloud accounts and when the ipad rang your phone rang?
I have a second grader who is already asking for his own phone. So I am sure this is being "discussed" among his kids in class. No idea how many of them actually have one. He has an ipad already that he has an addiction to. I was thinking of giving him his own icloud account to keep it separate. Didn't think of the potential for facetime calls which a separate account can also benefit from.
This is what we did with my son when he got his iPod. We set up his own iCloud email address and that was how he was able to text and Facetime people. Saved us a lot of trouble!

We gave my son a phone for Christmas of 5th grade bc the deal for a new line and phone was too good to pass up. Otherwise he would have gotten it for 5th grade graduation.

I set up iCloud accounts for my kids as well and their friends could FaceTime them through that.
They also had Facebook messenger kids accounts that their friends called them on as well.

Re: Phone
My oldest son got his on his 13th birthday and he had to pay for it. We added him on to the family plan so it was $350 for the phone.
My middle son is 11 and no phone. He will be waiting until 13.

My oldest is in 4th grade & I’m planning to hold out as long as possible. If he needs a phone in junior high it’ll be a very simple one… just for calling or texting.
