At what age did you get your child a phone? I’ve been going on thinking middle school was appropriate but am told I am mistaken.

Re: Phone
Middle School Sept of 6th grade
ETA- she had to wait until the end of Sept because my DH was giving her his Iphone and getting the new one for himself. The new model didnt' come out until the end of Sept though. So she had to wait. You woudl have thought the world was ending to hear her tell it. Not having a phone for those first 3 weeks of middle school. I'm surprised she survived it and didn't become a social outcast!

Meaning they get them younger or older?
My SIL wanted to know why my DD doesn’t have a phone yet because her son and all his friends do. They’re both in second grade.

That's bonkers.
My son got his right before middle school b/c he was going to have after school activities. But then covid struck and he didn't actually need it for that.

2nd grade? That's insane. In another 10 years they will be giving them to babies when they emerge from the womb at this rate!!!

Thats a little nuts. My kids used old phones then to play games and watch You Tube but they needed internet connection to do so... One of DS 1s friends got an actual phone in K - I had to block him as he constantly called me.

My son will get one in middle school most likely but no social media. I teach and I am very anti social media for kids.

Re: Phone
I got DS one for his 5th grade graduation. Personally, I do not think they are mature enough to have the responsibility of a phone and unlimited access to the internet and text messaging but he started riding his bike more frequently and I wanted to be able to get in touch with him if needed. I would say most of his friends got them for graduation. A handful had them before for their birthday or Christmas but none of them had them prior to 5th grade. Some had those gizmo watches.

That's absolutely ridiculous. I have a 2nd grader right now. He is never anywhere that I can't get in touch with the adult he is supposed to be with.

My kids are "adults" and they both got them in middle school. I didn't feel they needed them in elementary as they went to school by bus, took the bus home and then had a phone in school if needed. In middle school they had to walk to and from school and we both were working out of the house when they came home.

We did middle school because there was no more aftercare and she had to let herself in, and I wanted her to have it in case of emergency, locked out or what not.
Having said that my nieghbors kid has had an iphone (and not an old one) since second grade.

I said “ oh heck no!” And we got DD a phone. Then covid hit also so it keep her happy to see her friends , and play roblox.

We did all that on an Ipad when DD was younger and during Covid. She used my DH's ipad for that.

I am the oddball....DH and I are looking to get DD a phone because we are tired of her stealing ours to watch videos, etc. I have the extra line already so might as well get use out of it.

4th Grade but because DS was riding his bike to friend's houses and I wanted to know where they were all going. It was supposed to be 5th grade graduation but covid changed things when all he could do was ride bikes around the neighborhood.

Fifth grade for my older two and 4th grade for my youngest which was a total waste. She begged for it, we caved and she never even uses it.

Middle school and not any fancy phone either. All they need is calls and texts feature. If they want a fancy phone then have them save up their own money (allowance). Don't need to keep up with Joneses as they say.

Yes my older two started walking home in 4th so I wanted to be able to track them but we started with the Gizmo watch for a year.
My youngest doesn't walk home because she's lazy and she's in 5th so she doesn't even bring her phone to school. She is constantly calling me from other kids phones from the bus asking if she can go straight to so and so's house or if so and so can come over so I kind of wish she would just take her own phone.

It boggles my mind that we are handing 7 year olds devices that cos $1000 plus to play around on. My 12 year old isn't even responsible enough to not break or lose it.

We did end of 5th grade (middle school). That was for a full phone the she was able to carry around with her. When she was younger, she did have an Ipad that had Facetime on it to talk to her friends but that was only used in the house.
