Job B! It's so important to be happy when you have to be somewhere 40+ hours per week.

Job B
Me too. Job stability is incredibly important to me. I had a bunch of friends laid off recently, and though I may not make as much working for the state, I know no matter what happens in the economy I will always have a job and salary increase each year.

This is exaclty why I said this - I lost my job last year and now what I am looking for is something with stability.

Re: Benefits vs. Salary: which is more important to you?
DEFINITELY job A.
Why be stuck at a job that pays crap with crap raises and no room for growth?
Thats a dead-end situation.
If your benefits are bad... thats what the husband's job is for!
And even though the job may not be "as steady"... knowledge is power and it sounds like you would learn a lot more at job A. Better experience.

Even in a stable job, you can make job changes within the organization to move higher. Not necessarily even in the same department, but in the companies and organizations I have worked for, if they know you are a good worker, you will get preference over someone from the outside. That's how I received a promotion--they knew they wanted me and limited the search to employees already at the organization.
My DH works for a national company, but when the company was doing poorly, they made them take the week off of xmas without pay. In good years he gets a lot of $$ with profit sharing, but you can never count on that.

absolutely job A, because once you have that higher salary on your record, it will only be going up when you change company, and chances are the other company will be able to offer a better benefit and an even higher salary!

I agree. You will find me at the company who compensates me highest for my time. DH as well. Right now I have the coverage with my job, but if need be we switch to his.

True... you present good points.
But even with a supposedly "stable job"... people can still get laid off at a moment's notice.
My company has been SOLID financially for YEARS. But all of a sudden they had a bad first half this year... and a ton of people got laid off including somebody in my department.
So it can happen.
I take Job A... solely for the reason that I hope I get at least 1-2 years there. If I get laid off... so be it. I will then negotiate for a job 55k and up afterwards.
Thats how you make the big money jumps.

I guess I am thinking of where I am coming from working for the state. I could not be fired unless I stole or did something drastically wrong. I am under union contract and the fact of the matter is, so long as I do the bare minimum I will have a job. I don't do the bare minimum since I want to move up and am finishing my doctorate for the sole purpose of moving up, but there are plenty of lazy people who come in and do nothing but make a decent living.

Union and state jobs are a whole different animal.. and need to be considered differently than what the OP is mentioning.

Do you think the big money jumps are realistic from those without college degrees?
I am an admin assistant. By company jumping, your salary does increase. Or if your banker gets a promotion and you stay with him. I only have an AA degree. My cousin has a GED and she made a jump from 30K to 65K in 3 years.

If I didnt have benefits and I need them for me and my family, then I would take Job B and try and get a lot of OT.
If I didn't need benefits because I had them from DH's job, I would pick Job A.
In my opinion, in this day and age, you CANNOT be without benefits.

say job b was a state job...what is your opinion now? curious.
It depends. I would ask the following questions.
How good is the retirement plan? Do they have a pension plan in place?
Any chance for OT?
15k is a lot of money though... especially when you are talking 50k vs. 35k.
If the situation was the same... but that 15k was the difference between 120k and 105k... then thats a different story.

Re: Benefits vs. Salary: which is more important to you?
I would pick B.
I'm in a type A job right now, and I can't stand it. My staff is wonderful, but administration is getting worse and worse. We do have excellent benefits although raises are few and far between (in NYC). there's also room for advancement.
I'm applying for a type B job, and while there is a cut in pay, I know my blood pressure will return to normal and my mental health will improve.
I'd rather be happy and make less than make more and being miserable.

I have a union/civil service job and I definitely prefer it over private industry at this point in my life. My benefits are way better than anything DH has had for health insurance, I have a pension and opportunity for additional retirement investment and a lot of time off. I don't really make that much less than what I would in private industry, and for me other things more than make up for the slightly lower salary (for example - I can go to work in jeans everyday, great commute, etc.)
In fact, when I talk with some of the consultants we work with, they say if they had to do it over, they would have taken a job like mine in a heartbeat.

Re: Benefits vs. Salary: which is more important to you?
I had to agree with DJPill until you said it might be a state job. If you don't plan to be there long, Job A will give you the salary boost you need to keep moving up in pay even if it's an unstable job.
However, I work for the state and believe me there is always room to move around. It may take awhile, but there is definitely room. The benefits are pretty much the best you can get in NY and the security of the job is unparalleled. It makes it hard to leave as much as I know I am making less than I would in private industry for what I do. But the guaranteed salary increases every year, plus contract renegotiations every 3 years will slowly but surely increase your salary.
