Re: Benefits vs. Salary: which is more important to you?

I have Job A- but I make a lot more than that, and my company is stable. I do pay a lot for my HMO and don't have a lot of time off (2 weeks vacation), but I have raises and a ladder to climb. Plus the salary is pretty good!

My job actually is a lot like job B. The benefits are good though, not great. We didn''t have to pay for health or dental insurance untill last year, but we don't get eye care coverage & we have a non-matching 401K plan, and after 1 year, you get 3 weeks salary, 4 weeks after 5 years.

I am not happy, but it is not just the low salary. The vacation makes it hard to leave.

B if spouse didn't have benefits, but A if spouse did. Right now, we go through me for benefits because city teachers actually have great benefits. Plus, one little trip to the doctor could cost you years!

If DH has benefits, I would go with Job A - more room for growth. If DH doesn't have benefits, go with Job B and start looking for a Job C.

A 3% increase every 6 months would bring you up to position A in about 5 years though, wouldn't it?

Re: Benefits vs. Salary: which is more important to you?

I would pick option B.

Health Benefits are so important. You should actually put a money value to the benefits. MY DH health benefits now are horrible! I am not working at the moment.

Vacation time- Is a must for me. What good is it to have a great paying job if you can't have a nice vacation. My old job I had 23 days off vacation time and that wasn't even including the holidays. And if you have children, I would really consider this!

If you had to choose between:

job A, which has pays $50k (for arguments sake) and crappy benefits (no 401K, you have to pay a lot for a HMO, not a lot of time off, no perks etc), room for promotions and raises- but in an unsteady, semi-unstable company

My company is very very tiny. It's a host agency for travel and it is very internet based and we all know how the .com companies have come and gone. Though the agency itself has been around since 1969, the call center itself only opened in January.

In the 10 months that I have been there I have seen at least 20 people either be fired, quit, go to lunch and dont come back and even people who never showed up. The benefits are not that great, but I am under my husbands, we have no 401K, very little vacation time but their is an incredable amount of room for growth.

Because of the little vacation time and since we are open 6 days a week the company is very flexable on swaping shifts, and working a day off to use that time for a day you do work so you wont have to tap into your personal time.

We havent had any reviews yet, however I was promoted to supervisor when I had only been with the company for 9 months. So the growth is there. It's a slow and steady pace for some.

The big joke around the office though is our cheese is fried. My boss gave us all a copy of "who moved my cheese" and with all the changes going on our cheese has been moved so many times I think it's moldy and some people their cheese is grilled and fried.

I like even though the company is tiny and some days you just dont know what is going on in the end it's rewarding to say hey I remember when their was only 7 of us and now their are 25 of us. I've seen the company have it's up's and downs and the employees who are stick by the company and have faith in the company are the ones who are moving up.

I would prefer benefits over salary. My ins. now stinks and it's so hard to deal with so many Dr. bills .
