Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

I totally understand, I have been asked a couple of times, you can't have a drink right? I have put about 2 drops and i mean drops of alcohol to my lips since I have been pregnant. I would never think of having a full drink, though I have heard of people that do with no issues, just not for me

Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

Personally, I don't think its weird, its personal choice really. Here in the UK we are told that its find to have like 3-4 units of alcohol a week, but not all at once, so thats like 1-2 glasses of wine a week. Also, if we have low iron, we are told to have a pint of guinness! That comes from our midwifes!

Its personal choice to feel comfortable with having a drink while you are pregnant, if you aren't comfortable with it, don't do it!

Does anyone find it weird that people tell you its okay to drink occasionally when you are pregnant.

When ever I am at a social function I constatnly have people saying, "a glass of wine won't hurt" or "its fine to have just one beer"

I always thought it was off limits, I know I am a little paranoid so there in NO WAY I would even take so much as a sip of alcholol during my pregnancy.

As much as I would LOVE to have a nice glass of white wine or a really cold beer, I wouldn't enjoy it, I would feel so guilty.

I just think its strange that it seems like its okay now, what's next- people will start saying its okay to have a cigarette???

I dont think it is strange at all. Especially if you are in your 3rd trimester. There is a HUGE difference from having a beer and having a beer every weekend or everynight even and an even bigger difference between having a beer and getting wasted.

I had a belleni on my mom's birthday in January and champagne on my anniversary in February. The belleni was made by my dad, so I know it was weak and the champagne was celebratory.

I know doctors who will say to have a glass of wine to get some sleep when you really can't get comfy.

A glass of wine on a special occasion is not going to hurt, it just isn't.

Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

I had a small glass of champagne the other night to celebrate w/friends and after I drank it I just felt so guilty...totally not worth it to me!! If I'm going to have alcohol, I'm going to want more than one glass...so I'll just wait until my pg is over!!

eta: I was also told 1 glass is OK

Yeah my doctor said no alcholol, but at the time I thought well Duh, I know that.

I am in my 3rd trimester and I have been reading that although most of the major organs have developed in the baby, the most important organ the brain, develops mostly during the 3rd trimester. So I figure why introduce any alcholol durign the baby's brain developement, why risk it?

But I hear you its definitely a personal choice, I just never realized how acceptable it was now.

Well, and I am not condoning my MIL, but my DH was a preemie, and she drank her entire pregnancy and his brain is fine, so that is kind of why I think ONE drink every once in a while is really no big deal. I understand what you are saying as well, but I hardly think ONE drink will do the damage that you are talking about. But I also agree if you arent going to enjoy it, then don't bother either.

I guess also since DH & I are still very socially active ( which will change once the baby arrive..LOL) so if I had a drink every time someone said "oh come on its okay", then I would have a a six pack every week.

HA. Yeah. I think people don't realize that EVERYONE says it to you, could you imagine???

I just saved it for special reasons.

It's your choice.

I personally did not have any alcohol during the pregnancy.

I read some article and researched on it. At this time, there are no amount considered to be safe, whether it's one sip, a full glass or several glasses.

no.

point is..there are no cut and dry limits as to if one drink or 20 drinks causes fetal alcohol syndrome..that is a fact.
I just waited the 9 months.

Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

To me, it just wasn't worth it - but I'm also not a big wine drinker normally. I'd rather just wait until he's born.

The thing I have been craving though are more of the frozen fruity drinks (pina colodas, margeritas) so I have had some virgin ones that were just as delicious!Chat Icon

Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

As hard as I worked to get pregnant I can't imagine wanting a drink bad enough to risk any harm coming to the baby.

To me it's just not worth the risk. But I'm okay if other people feel okay doing it.

Everyone has different comfort levels with their pregnancy.

Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

It's okay to have a drink, it's also fine if you don't want to. Don't be judging anyone who does enjoy wine, just do what feels best for YOU.

I have not, but that's not to say I won't before this whole deal is done.

ITA. In my opinion its better to be safe than sorry...I'd rather just wait it out and have a drink after I give birth.

Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

My mother DRANK (as in 1-2 cocktails every night) through all 6 of her kids -- and we are all fine and healthy, full-term babies.

That isn't to say you SHOULD drink, but a drink here and there is not going to hurt the baby.

We put more crap in our bodies eating over-processed foods and just breathing our polluted air than we do by having a drink now and then.

I agree you should do what you feel comfortable with.

I had a couple of glasses of wine throughout my pregnancy (starting around the 20 week mark). Maybe 5-6 over the last 20 weeks. Towards the end of my pregnancy, it helped me to relax and my doctor told me it was okay to have a glass of wine occassionally if i wanted to after 20 weeks. I was totally comfortable with my decision and some of my friends have done the same thing.

You have to do what you feel comfortable with. I personally do not believe that an occassional glass of wine or beer will do harm to your baby, but that is just me.

Both of my boys were fine and healthy when born.

Re: Is it okay to have a drink???

I heard a glass of wine once in a while is ok. Haven't had any yet.

All I have had was a sip of dh's beer once.

I am dying for a mojito but I am not even considering that until after my baby is born.

I have bought the mojito flavored gum

I've had several glasses of wine throughout my pregnancy. More so in the 2nd trimester actually...now I just don't like the taste. I'm obviously more liberal with things I eat/drink during pregnancy then other people though.
