Re: Tree/Shade Help- semi vent

We have a row of arborvities hiding our fence. I don't have any pics, but they work well

if you really hate them, plant bamboo. it grows several feet in a year & you can't kill it.
otherwise i'd vote for aborvites. if you search around online you'll find info on how fast they grow, then you can buy them locally

DON'T DO THE BAMBOO!!!! The previous owners had bamboo along the edge of our property. We have been trying to get rid of it ever since.... we have shoots all over the yard, and I don't know how to get rid of it. Tried sprays, pulling them out as soon as I see them, etc. I can keep them somewhat under control, but they are still all over the yard.

I would look into fast growing privacy hedges as a better alternative. There are some that grow several feet a year.

That's what my parents did. Unfortunately, they have not grown very fast but you can buy ones that are taller than your fence and just water and miracle grow them frequently and hope for the best!

I wouldn't do bamboo. The roots will go under the fence into your neighbor's yard and start growing shoots. Once that happens, you can't get rid of it without professional help. Go with the aborvities. I have them surrounding my patio and they provide complete privacy. They are fast growers and don't require much maintenance.

Re: Tree/Shade Help- semi vent

Leyland Cypress is a fast growing evergreen and according to a few horticulturists we've spoken to recently, a very popular planting lately (people are moving away from Hemlocks, etc).

Not all bamboo is unmanageable/unkillable (word?? lol)/root spreading, unfortunately I don't know which ones are or aren't - sorry.

I love the look of leyland cypresses - we're thinking of buying a few for privacy in our backyard too. They grow really fast and are beautiful evergreens. They can be pricey though - the ones we saw at our local nursery last weekend were HUGE but they cost $500.
