in spain, there are tons of restaurants which sell drinks and tiny finger foods.... the origin of tapas is the size of the plate... it should be a plate that is small enough to balance on top of a glass, if a customer is standing up w/o a table.
if you go to a tapas bar, you usually split several different tapas dishes with your friends... the restaurant keeps a running tab for you

Tapas are small spanish dishes. They do things like Patatas Bravas, Manchego Cheese, Olives, Meatballs, Chorizo, Bread, Yummy. We have a big LaTasca next to my office, but I never get to go!
