Re: BF - Pumping question
It felt very weird to me in the beginning too...like I was doing something wrong. My milk dripped too, I think I had to lean forward (and I put a tissue underneath sometimes). It definitely takes some getting used to. Good luck

Re: BF - Pumping question
I pump for every feeding because DS has had a lot of trouble latching.
I still want him to get BM though so I pump every three hours - one hour before his feeding time.
The first time I pumped the milk leaked out the bottom a little bit. Now I lean forward a little in order to prevent the milk from leaking out of the bottom.

Re: BF - Pumping question
At that stage I would pump from one side and feed from the other or pump after, but I always got less than 2 ounces for a very long time. Now I get alot more than that but it was frustrating...I would have to add a few pumping sessions together to get enough for DD to eat. It helps to sort of push in your boob on the sides too while you are pumping.
I always have to lean way forward to get the milk to go into the bottle. And still some ends up in the shield, which is fine now that I can pump alot, but in the beginning I would try to shake it in when I was done. Good Luck!

I'm in the same boat in that my DD doesn't latch... however, kudos for pumping at every feeding time... I do it 3 times a day at the most... and I'm exhausted on this schedule and can't seem to get anything done. We suppliment with formula... it's not ideal, but ideal would have been successful latching. Using formula felt wierd to me at first, but I can't starve the baby.
Also, you have to lean forward and press the "cones" into you to prevent leakage. I was "taught" proper pumping in the hospital b/c even there she wouldn't latch and even the lactation consultants, as die hard as they are about BFing, were frustrated.

Re: BF - Pumping question
Try to pump in the morning... you should have more milk then. Do you have a good electric pump? Also, the baby shouldnt need to empty both breast this young... feed her from one side then pump the other.

I pump every 3 hours for every feeding as well due to latching issues. In addition to leaning forward, I also massage my breasts while I pump to maximize the milk. It's tricky while double pumping, but I'm getting the hang of finishing pumping within 10 minutes- washing the parts is another story!
I still get leakage at the bottom of the shields every now and then. I keep a receiving blanket on my lap to catch any spills.

Re: BF - Pumping question
When I first started pumping I pumped one hour after every feeding to build up a freezer supply.
Now that my supply is well established (DD is 5 1/2 months), most days I pump first thing in the morning before I feed her. Then on the days that I work I try very hard to pump twice while at work. Sometimes I only manage to pump once.
Honestly in the beginning, the pumping/feeding schedule was completely and utterly exhausting. I felt like I was either feeding her, pumping or cleaning the pump parts with absolutely NO down time. Now that we have a routine of feeding and pumping which generally works (sometimes she wakes up to eat before I wake up to pump), it is much easier.
As for the milk not getting into the bottles, the only time I have a small leak problem is when I'm done and removing the shields. There always seems to be a bit that will drip out. I try to grab the pads that keep my shirt dry to catch that drip.

I had to do the same - leaning forward and would always have a tissue on my nightstand.
One thing I would recommend is a hands free pumping bra if you plan on pumping often. Gave me my hands back so that I could use the remote while pumping!
