Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
Yes! A friend of mine that I went to HS with was always known as Lee. A few years after we graduated high school, we ended up working together, and he was then known as Ray.

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
i changed my name from X to Y when i was finishing up college and looking for a job. legally i'm still X but everyone after college calls me Y. everyone i knew before the name change still calls me X. sounds a little weird to me but i know it's hard for them to change to another name for someone they known for years as X.
eta: might be dumb but i changed it for resumes reason. people have a hard time pronouncing it so i wanted to change it to something that people would remember easier when flipping thru bunches of resumes.

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
My former college roommate "changes" his name every few years.
I met him as "Rob". Then he was officially "Bobby" for a while. Then it was "Robert", then "Bob" I think... no matter what he tells other people to call him, I still call him Rob...

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
I met someone at work many years back and we became friends. Throught the years I would notice that her mom would call her by a different but similar name. Finally I asked her what the deal was and she told me when she turned 18 she changed her name because she didnt like Lisa but her mom still calls her by her "given" name.

At least those are all versions of the same name. That would be easier for me to get used to than someone who changes to a completely different name.
I have a friend whose full name is Theodore. He answers to just about anything -- People call him Theodore, Theo, Ted, Teddy, etc.... and he claims he doesn't have a preference.
To the OP, I think it would be difficult for me to get used to calling someone by their new name after knowing them for so long... but maybe after a few more years it'll feel more natural?

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
I had a friend who has a long given name that has a few typical nicknames. She went exclusively by one nickname from birth until college. Once she got to college, she changed to one of the other nicknames. It's interesting because you know at what point in her life she met someone by what they call her. All of us who knew her pre-new name tried to call her the new one, but it just wasn't happening!

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
I love my DH's first name but sometimes wish he would change it because the combo of his first and last name make it soooo common, and apparently that makes it easier to steal one's identity.
Stupid thieves.

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
I knew this girl growing up. The name we called her wasn't her real name. She ended up changing it when she was younger cause people would get it wrong. So some people would call her one name and others another name.

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
Try following THIS one!!!
I have a family member (through marriage) who did this. Changed his ENTIRE name - first and last.
His wife (my blood relative) changed her last name to match his "new" last name.
One of his kids from a first marriage kept her "old" last name but his other child changed his last name to the "new" one.
Then the children he and my cousin had all had their "new" last name.
Talk about confusing!!

Re: Ever have a friend change their first name?
The only instances I know are trangendered people.
I would definitely find it odd.
I had a boyfriend also whose family called him his middle name. It took me awhile to get used to.
