Re: Would you let your child play with another child...

I think that is so sad. I don't really remember, but my Mom told me that I pulled my hair out in chunks when I was very little. I would twirl and twirl until it was a big nest and then just pluck it out. She cut all of my hair off.

To answer your question, I would definitely let my DD play w/ your DD! People are so mean!

That makes me very sad. I think its terrible for a parent to not allow a child to play with another child for that reason. Chat Icon

ITA!

If anything I would take the opposite approach and try to teach them how just because we're all different we still are all the same and can play together.

I wouldn't blink an eye at something like that of course I would let my DD play with a child with some sort of disability/condition. I teach my daughter that she should play with ANYONE who is nice to her, period. The key for us is that the child be nice to my DD and that is all I care about.

I actually feel sad for those children that are being taught not to play with your DD. What kind of lessons are those mothers teaching their children and what will those children grow up to be like?

I'm so sorry that your DD is going through all of this. I have to send you both Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

FM if you are interested in trying to set up a playdate--I don't know where you live or how old your DD is, DS is just over 2 years.

No, it wouldn't bother me. I don't like him playing with children who are obviously sick or who are bullies, but as far as physical issues, no. I think it's good for both children as others have already stated.

I am so sorry this is happening to you and DD!

Absolutely! And I'm Chat Icon at the positive comments on here. I'm so sorry you're going through thisChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I do think that some people are very insensitive and can't handle things that are not "in the norm". My DS is not a typically developing child. I actually lost someone who I thought was a great friend partially because of her insensitivities to DS. She acted kind of like he wasn't good enough to play with her child. It was absolutely hurtful and made me not want to go on playdates for a while, but I've found some people are just like that. Can't change them. It wasn't us or DS that was the problem. I usually explain DS's situation to other people so they understand and it really helps (and they feel more comfortable).

I have trouble picturing this... Ethan is such a sweet boy! Chat Icon Who wouldn't want to have a playdate with him?

To the OP - I am mad for you, and while I am a curious person by nature and would of course ask (gently) about your DD's hair pulling (only out of concern for her, not to point out that there is something "wrong") I would never stop my child from playing with her. Like a PP said - that doesn't reflect the kind of person she is! Chat Icon

I would, and I have. I am so sorry to those of you who have been dealing with this type of discrimination. It is so terrible that children are being raised that way Chat Icon Chat Icon

I cannot imagine someone not allowing their child to play with anther who has an abnormality or disability. That's just awful.

To answer your question- yes of course I would. In fact my DD is friends with our neighbor who has Down syndrome- she adores him.

Re: Would you let your child play with another child...

I wouldnt think twice about it...

It's so sad though how some people are...

My eldest daughter has Down Syndrome so Ive, unfortanately, run across this myself from time to time...

My ex (he's an ex for rather obvious reasons) wouldnt come to my daughters PreK graduation because he couldnt bear to see children like that. He always told me that he didnt feel that way about my daughter (not his child) but it soon became rather evident that he did...

It might be b/c of my experiences but I tend to, kinda, seek out the children who are special for my children to be friends with. Everyone needs a friend and my children need to learn that everyone is the same inside...

Absolutely, without second thought. One of my closest friends has a son who is Alex's age who has autism - Alex has more playdates with him than any of her friends, and she adores him, and brings out such a sweet, playful side in him that it warms my heart Chat Icon

Re: Would you let your child play with another child...

I think I would take the same approach as with any other child and make sure they are not aggressive, etc... before I felt comfortable letting DS play with anyone.

But that goes for ANY child.

It is sad! People transfer they own issues on their children instead of trying to understand.

I can understand a concerned parent at first but once they asked you and you said Dr. said there was nothing wrong and they see her on a "regular" basis, I don't get why they would not let their child play with yours.

Re: Would you let your child play with another child...

I would never. In fact I would encourage it and if my child asked me any questions-I would use that as a sprinboard to talk about how everyone is special-and there are all different reasons.

This hits close to home because my nephew has alopecia and goes through phases where he loses a LARGE portion of hair. He is 6. I am not sure if he gets made fun of but I don't think so...

If the other moms see your DD doing it maybe they are worried that their DC will start doing it too- kinda like learn the behavior or mimick it? That is the only thing I can think off.

this is what I was thinking. Kids imitate eachother and maybe other parents are concerned their child will learn certain behaviors

Re: Would you let your child play with another child...

That is horrible that you are getting that reaction!

I just wanted to let you know that my sister pulled her hair out terribly for some time when she was little. My mom took her to doctors who all told my mom not to stress about it, it was a phase (a long one) and she eventually stopped, just as my brothers eventually stopped sucking their thumbs.

Re: Would you let your child play with another child...

Of course I would - whether it was a habit or a real issue. I coached Special Olympics for years and feel very strongly about these types of things. As PPs have said, children don't discriminate, esp not at that age - parents do and that's where their children learn it. I'm so sorry you're going through this.
