Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
Just for the record..... I think if anyone is not wearing a Blue White Red shirt I will throw in a temper tantrum on July 14th.
Just to be clear... not to be called insensitive, we now have to celebrate other Countries Holidays too? Right?

Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
its insane. i mean the kids are doing to be snots (most likely) BUT they have every right to wear any t-shirt as long as it doesn't have any offensive material on it and the American flag is not offensive.

Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
So let me get this straight......
An AMERICAN school wanted to suspend students for wearing an AMERICAN flag on a t-shirt? Just bc it happens to be the day of a DIFFERENT country's independence?????

Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
I don't think that I would think twice about someone wearing Mexico's flag on July 4th, in the US. Wouldn't even click in my head that they were trying to be disrespectful.
Who cares if they were wearing the American Flag in their own country, but on another country's holiday? I can see if they were taunting Mexican-Americans, but if they weren't, these people need to find something better to do with their time.

Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
this is insane! If someone was wearing a t-shirt with a flag of another country on the 4th of july, I wouldn't really care. We ARE in the USA, so why would they be asked to not wear the flag?? Cinco de Mayo isn't even celebrated here. Of course individual people from mexico celebrate it and people use it as an excuse to get margaritas, but it isn't like it is marked on our calendars or people get off work for it. And 95% of americans (non mexican) that do celebrate it don't even know what it is they are celebrating. That was just dumb of the school to do that.

Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
Seriously? Unless the shirts had something offensive towards Mexicans (which based on the article, it looks like they were plain american flag shirts), I don't think this is right at all. It's Mexico's holiday, not ours. Like a PP said, I wouldn't think twice if someone wore another country's flag on 4th of July.

Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
i do think the kids were clearly trying to start something by wearing the shirts - the article said it was school with a large percentage of mexican/american students.. so i'm sure those kids knew exactly what they were doing. But, they do have the right to wear whatever they want - just don't claim to be all innocent about it.
i don't blame the principal for asking them to remove the shirt either - not because it was offensive, but because he was trying to avoid trouble in his school. Doesn't warrant a suspension though IMO

Re: Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees
doesnt this fall under freedom of speech- they should have been allowed to wear whatever they wanted no matter what the day was
but the article does hint that they did it to be a-holes- which is sad but the school should have left it alone.

My point exactly...I never said whose blood sweat and tears. The point is how is wearing a symbol of the country that allows them to be what they want to be and where they want to be disrespectful of anyone? Its not like they were wearing anti Mexican shirts.

i took this part of your quote " you would still be just Mexican's wouldn't you?" to be really inflammatory, which is why i responded that way

Unreal and absolutely disgusting.
So we should make sure we don't show any patriotism on any holidays that might "offend" any others when it's "their" holiday?

Well - I apologize if its came off harsh or inflammatory, but I was reading the article and they quoted a Mexican American student who said they she thought that the boys were being disrespectful by wearing the shirts because it was their holiday. Truthfully I am sure that they kids were rebelling a bit and wearing the American flags on a Mexican holiday to start trouble. But if we look at the facts, If America wasn't the country that it is, built on the backs off all those who have come here and fought to keep it free, then that student wouldn't be here...they would still be in Mexico. That is what I meant. In truth if you want to fly a flag for Mexican Independence don't forget to fly the one helps you live here. I am Irish and Italian and American. I will wear my Irish and Italian flags but I never fly them higher than the American. We all made this country and that's the united one we all stand under. Sorry - that went off on a tangent... I don't mean to offend, but the whole thing just seemed silly to me.

ITA
Yes it may have sparked some tension, but why weren't the Mexican-American children wearing the Mexican flag tee shirts if their national holiday is so important ? If these students are American born, why should they take offence to the flag of the country of their birth ? Did the school take down any of the American flags that might have been around ? When I was a student back in the dinosour age, there was an AMERICAN FLAG in every classroom, every school office and the auditorium.
Good grief.

BS is all it is....I am not sensitive to anyone any more. If I hear one more student say how he/she is going "home to my country" for summer vacation, I think I am going to flip my lid! Seriously, your country?
But it is this country that has educated you, fed you, took care of you medically, gave you subsidized housing, etc....but go home to your country!

ita - it sounds like there was something else going on here - some kind of feud or something and that these boys knew it would piss people off to wear this. unfortunately, what can you do? it's a lose lose situation for the principal. i'm sure he was trying to prevent some kind of outburst/fight, but he didn't have much ground to stand on in this case (without proof that this was done to instigate something) and now the school's getting a big backlash. i don't necessarily agree with the steps he took, but it does sound like it wasn't just an anti-american move.
