1 year old and crying in the middle of the night, I need your help!

Gavin has woken up the past 3 nights crying his eyes out. I cave and pick him up and rock him in the glider and he lets me hold him, but stays wide awake....

I return him to his crib and he screams and cries and it breaks my heart.
He has just started crying when I leva daycare too...thanks to my brother and his jinx!

Anyone experience this? Is this a phase?

Maybe beginnings of separation anxiety? Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sounds like you are doing the right thing- comforting him in the middle of the night- maybe it will pass soon.

If it persists for more than a week or two then maybe reevaluate how to handle it.

Is he teething?

Re: 1 year old and crying in the middle of the night, I need your help!

It is just a phase most likely.

Does he have any new teeth coming in that you can see?

Maybe he has night terrors - I remember Jack waking up a few nights completely hysterical.

How long does he cry once you put him back in the crib before he goes to sleep?

In regards to him crying when you leave daycare -- Jack was like that too for awhile when I would leave him -- it's def. a seperation phase that they go through - and hopefully it will pass within a week or so. Chat Icon

Re: 1 year old and crying in the middle of the night, I need your help!

I am with you only it started with DS about 2 months ago….

First it was 2 teeth coming in and learning to stand in his crib (but not knowing how to sit back down)
Then it was a really bad cold that made it hard for him to breathe
Then when the cold ended it was an ear infection
Now I just don’t k now…DS is slowly killing mommy!
I do believe DS is having some separation anxiety when he wakes up and no one is there he cries.

Sorry no advice just a lot of sympathy!

I think I feel a new top tooth, but it might be my imagination.
We gave him Hylands tablets once but I'm not sure if it was a coincidence that he calmed down.
He cries for about 10-15 minutes and usually falls back to sleep.
He actually WAS crying in his sleep last night....

Should I pick him up at all? He stays totally awake and lets me rock him so I think it's the right thing, he seems to need the comfort, but I hate having to put him back in the crib and make him cry. And I don't wanna start a bad habit...

Re: 1 year old and crying in the middle of the night, I need your help!

ugh - I don't know - I am so scared of creating bad habits with Jack -- I'll do something for one or two nights - and then I start to worry about what type of habit am I helping him form.

Is Gavin the type that will let you just pat him on the back if you go in there?

Also - I personally wouldn't go in his room unless he was standing at crib waiting for me to go in (do you have a video monitor to see this?)

There have been plenty of nights where Jack was crying in his sleep - he would stand up for a second - lay back down crying - and then pass out. I always think if I went in there I would have woken him up when he was just getting ready to go back to sleep.

Sorry so long! Chat Icon

Diana, he's totally standing and crying and waiting for me to come in, he presses against me while he's standing in the crib while I rub his back, and when I lay him down he freaks out and practically climbs out of the crib!

ugh - that is the absolute worst - I hope it's just a phase that passes soon!

If you didn't go in there - about how long would he cry for?

I have no real advice, but DD does this on occassion too and I am the worst. I keep talking about CIO but I can't bring myself to do it.

The other night she woke at 2am SCREAMING... I picked her up and then tried to put her back down - she LOST IT. So I took her to bed with me. Chat Icon She woke up an hour later crying AGAIN, but calmed down a bit quicker since she was right next to me. DH and I were both zombies yesterday because of it.

I know we're starting terrible habits but I feel bad for her because I know she's teething.

Wish I had advice but DS has been doing this off and on since he was 10 months old and believe it or not - this is an improvement for us! My ped tells me not to go in - to let him cry or if I do to just go in and briefly console him and leave. Neither of those approaches seems to work for us Chat Icon At least once or twice per week DS still wakes up - he is 15 mos.

DD has been doing this as well. I usually wait to see if she is going to stand up in her crib and go nuts before going in there. If I do go in, I do not pick her up - instead I lay down on the floor (I have a pillow and blanket set up already) and rub her foot until she lays down, and then I stroker her cheek until she goes back to sleep. It usually only takes 10 minutes.

DS went through a bad phase like this -- lasted about a week or so. He was hysterical every night. I think it started when his eye teeth were coming in and then he got used to me coming in there. The first few nights I went in, calmed him down and when i put him back in his crib we went crazy. I would sit on the rocking chair next to his crib til he fell back asleep. After a few nights, when I knew there was nothing wrong I had to let him CIO, because I think he was just looking for us to come in.
The first night he cried about 15 min and then just stopped and went to sleep. Second night was about 10 min and the third night I heard him get up but by the time I looked at the monitor he was already sitting and went right back to sleep.

Chat Icon I know how hard it is -- and for me, I always worry if I am doing the right thing! Chat Icon

Re: 1 year old and crying in the middle of the night, I need your help!

My Ds went through the same exact thing. First it was his teeth and then it was his ear infections ( he got them quite often) At first I used to pick him up just as you are doing...then after a few weeks of this behavior, I realized that he was just looking for me to pick him up so, I tried to comfort him with out picking him up, I would hug him as he was standing in his crib and then lay him down...I took a few weeks and a few times each night but he finally learned to put himself back to sleep. My Ped to me that they have to teach themselves how to put them selves to sleep, that some children it takes a bit longer...My DS was one of them

DS does this off and on, and he's about the same age as your DS. He screams hysterically, you would think he is physical pain. Sometimes he may be in pain (teething), but usually I think it's separation anxiety. If Gavin is fine when you pick him up, that's what it sounds like to me.

Also, is he walking or close to it? Right before DS learned to crawl and walk his sleep was very funky and I couldn't leave him for a second even during the day. Once he got used to it, he went back to normal.

yes, he's almost walking, that's weird....Chat Icon

Last night I let him cry, he woke up maybe 4-5 times, let out a scream and then fell back to sleep.....

He has also been a lot grouchier during the day with me too......clingy, hates the changing table.......he's being a thorn this week!
I told him Santa is sending all his toys back!

Victoria has been doing this only on nights her molars have been bothering her. This is about a month now but thankfully only a night or two a week as they are coming up very slowly Chat Icon
She also presses against me while standing in the crib and has a few fits when I walk away. I have stood at her crib for 20 minutes just rubbing her back while she wimpers herself to sleep. After that she seems to be okay for the rest of the night. There have been 2 times we have had to give some pain meds to help.
