1-Year-Old Blood Work
Where did you take your 1-year-old for blood work? Are there any labs that are particularly good with kids that age? Thanks!

Re: 1-Year-Old Blood Work
We found a woman at good Sam that was awesome. Robin. She used to come in after 4, but things may have changed...

Re: 1-Year-Old Blood Work
Yeah we are at 16 months and still haven't done this.
I may skip it but I have heard Good Sam is best for this.
Sadly, our insurance doesn't cover the lab there.
Make sure you check your insurance to see which labs they cover.

Yep that is us. My insurance really only covers Quest and I really am not a fan of Quest for myself- much less a baby. I find the thought of drawing blood from a vein of a baby to be barbaric if you ask me.

I say this every time this topic comes up, so I apologize in advance if you have seen it already. My DS 1 year bloodwork came back that he was anemic. We had to put him on vitamins with extra iron and have him re-tested a few months later to make sure his iron had gone up. For me, the bloodwork can help you either have peace of mind that things are good or it can help you discover some things that need intervention and you can correct it.
Whenever anyone tells me that they are hesitant to get it done, I tell that story because for me, the importance of it is much greater than the fear of getting it done.

Re: 1-Year-Old Blood Work
I just took DD for her 1 yr bloodwork at LabCorp. I made an appt online. they tell you which locations have pediatric apptmts.
I was terrified bc DD HATES HATES HATES the doctor and I knew it wouldnt be good, but I knew it needed to be done.
They were really good with her! I was quite pleased.
I went to the one on 111 in Islip but they have other locations that do pediatrics.

Re: 1-Year-Old Blood Work
Another vote for Good Sam here! I really didn't want to do it and was literally making myself sick over it, but like the OP mentioned you just never know. I don't remember the nurses name at the Good Sam Lab, but she was great, she got it right away and it was over quickly. Honestly I think my DS was more upset that DH had to hold him down over the fact that he was getting blood taken. GL!

I know. I know. My DH says this al the time. DD is already on extra iron so I am not too too worried about the anemia. But I know I need to do it. I have major medical anxiety- to the point where I hadn't gone to the gyno in about 20 years before I got preggo- and I now feel like I'm projecting that anxiety onto my DD and I know it's no good.
We are gonna do it- I just need to get the nerve and take a Xanax maybe!

Your insurance should also cover the auxiliary services for any hospital that they cover and every hospital has a lab. I always take DC's to Good Sam's lab - they are fantastic!!
I promise you this is one of the things in life that the anticipation is 100000x worse than the actual event. It is literally 2-3 minutes, tops. It takes me longer to find a parking spot than we actually spend in the lab.

Re: 1-Year-Old Blood Work
I absolutely dreaded this....avoided going for a few months even though the ped gave me the script at her 1 year appointment.
When I finally went, I have to say it wasnt too bad. I mean, DD didnt enjoy it and she did cry. But it was over so quick that it was really only a minute or less of crying. She actually cried harder before it was done because she knew something was about to happen. The whole thing was over really fast.

Re: 1-Year-Old Blood Work
a friend recommended sunrise labs in patchogue on sills road. they were great!!
my daughter watched them put the needle in and didnt cry until the blood started coming out. but once it was done she was fine.
if you use them, just call beforehand and they will tell you when they have 2 people working so they can both help. they show you how to sit and hold your child and all that stuff.
and there was NO wait! i used to go to quest and would wait forever even with an appt!

Re: 1-Year-Old Blood Work
My ped's nurse did it:
It was a finger prick. It wasn't a big deal... my pediatrician almost begged us to do it at exactly 1 yr. We live in an old house & she has seen high lead levels due to lead dust in the air. We were relieved when levels came back normal.
