You have to do what is right for you. I personally decided not to do the US/AFP, for the exact reason you said. I am a worrier by nature, and would not have gotten the amnio anyway regardless of the results. So we (DH & I) decided not to go for the extra tests. Any major issues would have been detected during the Level II anyway, so I did not see the point.

We did, however, get ourselves tested for certain genetic issues like Cooley's & Mediterranean anemia, and also Cystic Fibrosis to see if we were both carriers. We were not.

I went for the ultrascreen, but knew if anything "turned up" that we'd go for the amnio-which is a test rather than a screening.

It is a very personal choice. I personally wanted the test done. If there was anything detected I would not get an amnio done BUT I would have the rest of the pregnancy to learn more about the problem.

we did the ultrascreen with my first pregnancy and everything was fine - we did it with this pregnancy and the results were fine also.

Like the ladies said - if god forbid something did turn up - you can decide to have the amnio - but even that is a real personal decision.

I'm not doing it just because I will not have an amnio, so why go through unwanted stress if the tests come up with something.

This girl's chances exist regardless of whether she knows about the chance or not! There are reasons to have information. There is the option of an amnio to find out for sure. If someone doesn't want an amnio, that's fine, but the option is there.

Re: 11-13 week ultra screen question..

The way I see it is this: I wanted to be prepared as much as possible if my child will be born with a disability. I do NOT want to be surprised in the delivery room.

I also don't understand the fear of the amnio anymore- the chance of miscarriage has dropped significantly (used to be a 1% chance- now it's LESS than a .5% chance).

ETA: this is all my personal opinion. What you decide to do is YOUR decision.

I did it because God forbid something was wrong I wanted to be prepared. No matter what we were not planning on terminating but if something was wrong I wanted time to research and prepare myself.

As others have said it is a very personal decision. One way to look at it is not with the question would you terminate - BUT to look at it IF there is something wrong what can I do to get the best care possible for my baby when she/he is born. If you do not do the tests you could be surprised and not prepared to care for or have the best doctors lined up to give the care the baby needs.
